This is a prayer for asking God to bless your ordinary days, the hours of work, errands, conversations and quiet moments that make up most of a life. Pray it first thing in the morning, before the phone and the to-do list take over, or any time you want to start the day by handing it back to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your day calls for them.

Christian Prayer for Daily Blessings

Lord, thank you for this new day. I did not make it, and I cannot promise how it will go, but I know you are already in it. Bless the hours ahead of me. Give me patience with the people I will live alongside, especially the ones who are hard to love before lunch. Steady my mind when the inbox fills up, when the phone rings with bad news, when I feel the pull to worry about things I cannot control.

Bless the people I love today. Keep my children safe on the way to school and the way home. Be near my husband, my friends and my coworkers, and show me where a kind word or a helping hand is needed. Guard my tongue so that what I say builds people up. Bless the work of my hands, and let it be done with honesty and care. Where I am tired, give me rest, and where I am anxious, give me peace that does not depend on how things turn out. Let me notice your goodness in small things: the warm coffee, a message from an old friend, a patch of sunlight on the floor. Make me faithful with what you give me today, and keep my heart turned toward you when the day gets loud. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, bless this day as I walk into it. Go before me in what I have to face, and stay with me in what I cannot fix. Give me patience, kindness and a clear mind. Help me see your hand in small mercies along the way, and let me rest in knowing you are good and near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Numbers 6:24-26

24 ‘The LORD bless you, and keep you. 25 The LORD make his face to shine on you, and be gracious to you. 26 The LORD lift up his face toward you, and give you peace.’

(WEB)

This is the blessing God gave Moses to speak over his people. Pray it slowly over the people you love, asking that God would keep them, shine his face on them and give them peace.

Psalm 90:14

Satisfy us in the morning with your loving kindness, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.

(WEB)

Ask God to satisfy you with his steadfast love early in the day, so that whatever comes, you begin from a place of joy rather than dread.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray these words when yesterday went badly. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask him to let that newness shape how you meet today.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Ask the Lord to guard your going out and your coming in. Name the places you will go today and the people you will see, and commit each one to his keeping.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When the day starts to press on your mind, bring your requests to God with thanksgiving. Pray this passage as a way to trade your worry for the quiet that God provides.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying it while you are still in bed, or sitting in the car before you go into work, or standing at the kitchen sink with your coffee going cold. Pick one spot and one habit so the prayer has a place to live. If your hands are busy with breakfast or a child’s lunch, let the words run as you work, and pause on the lines that catch you.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with you. A spouse, a roommate or a friend on the phone can take turns reading a line each, and that shared rhythm often makes the prayer last longer than a single reading would. Write it on an index card and tuck it into your bag or taped to the bathroom mirror, so that when the day gets hard you already have words ready.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless you and keep you today. May he make his face shine upon you and give you grace for each hour. May you walk in his peace, be kind to those you meet, and rest in the knowledge that you are loved.
