This evening prayer for endurance is for the end of a long day when you have nothing left to give and still have to keep going tomorrow. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before you walk inside, or on the edge of the bed before the lights go out. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your day left its marks.

Evening Prayer for Endurance

Lord, I come to You at the end of this day tired in a way sleep alone does not fix. I carried things I did not finish, and some of them I am not sure I can carry tomorrow. The work pressed on me, the people around me needed more than I had, and my patience ran thin somewhere around dinner. I confess that I tried to hold it all by myself, and I am putting it down now. Take the unfinished pieces, the conversations I dreaded, and the worry that keeps me awake before I have even lain down.

Give me strength for the long stretches I cannot see the end of. Where I am worn down by illness, by a hard marriage, by a child who is struggling, or by a job that never lets up, meet me in it. Keep my heart from hardening and my hands from going limp. Help me remember that what I am enduring is not the same as being abandoned, and that You have been faithful through every hard season I have already lived through. Let me rest tonight without guilt for what I did not do.

Guard me while I sleep. Quiet the racing thoughts, watch over the people I love, and wake me tomorrow with enough grace for one day at a time. I trust You with the hours I cannot control. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I cannot carry this alone tonight. Take what I could not finish and the worry I cannot put down. Hold me up through the night, steady my heart, and give me what I need to keep going when morning comes. I rest in You. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

Read this slowly at bedtime, letting the image of a watchful keeper settle your mind. Ask the Lord to keep watch over your rest and the rest of your household while you sleep.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

Pray these words over the day you have just lived. Thank God that His mercies have not run out, and ask Him to make each new morning a fresh start you can receive.

Romans 5:3-5

3 Not only this, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope: 5 and hope doesn’t disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Pray this verse as an invitation you can accept tonight. Tell Jesus the things that weigh on you, and ask Him to give you the rest that only He can provide.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed point in your evening, such as after the dishes are done or once the house is quiet, and pray there every night so it becomes a familiar landing place. If you can, sit somewhere with a steady, plain surface, and hold something in your hands while you speak, like a mug gone cold, a cloth, or the edge of your pillow. The physical act gives your restless body something to do while your mind slows down.

If you share a home with a spouse, a friend, or a roommate, ask them to pray the prayer with you or to read the shorter version aloud while you listen. Someone else speaking the words can help when you are too exhausted to find them yourself. Praying together also reminds you that endurance is easier when you are not the only one holding the weight.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over His people guard your going out and your coming in. May He steady your breathing, lighten what you carry, and give you rest that reaches past your body into your heart. When morning comes, may you find enough strength for the day ahead, and may you know that you have never endured alone.
