This simple prayer for a struggling friend is for the moments when someone you love is carrying something heavy and you do not know what to say to God on their behalf. You can pray it in the morning before you text them, in the car after a hard phone call, or quietly while sitting beside them. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for a Struggling Friend

Father, you already know the weight my friend is carrying right now. You know the sleepless nights, the bills that will not balance, the diagnosis they are still trying to understand, and the quiet loneliness that comes when everyone else seems to be doing fine. I do not have to explain it all to you, because you see it more clearly than I ever could.

So I ask you to be near them today. Give them enough strength for the next hour, not the whole year. Send someone kind across their path, whether it is a neighbor, a coworker, or a stranger who notices. Calm the racing thoughts that tell them they are failing, and remind them that their worth does not rise and fall with how well they cope. Let them feel that they are not alone, even on the days when they cannot feel much of anything.

Thank you that you never grow tired of hearing from us, and that you invite us to bring our burdens to you without hurry. Hold my friend close, and help me to be the kind of friend who shows up with patience and honest love. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is struggling and I am asking for your help right now. Be with them in this exact moment, steady their breathing and their heart, and let them sense your presence even if they cannot find words. Give me the right thing to say, or the wisdom to simply sit with them in silence. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific brokenness your friend is facing, and thank God that he draws near to those who are hurting. It is a reminder that nearness, not perfection, is what he offers the crushed in spirit.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and imagine your friend setting down the load they have been dragging around. Ask Jesus to make the invitation real to them, especially in the places where they feel most weary.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this for your friend’s courage in the face of fear. Ask God to be the strength they lean on when their own runs out, and let the promise of his presence steady you as well.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray against the fear that nothing will ever get better. Ask that your friend would be certain, even on dark days, that nothing can separate them from the love of God.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Pray this when your friend feels too weak to keep going. Ask God to show his strength in their weakness, and to help them see that grace is enough for today.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as early in the morning or just before bed, and pray this prayer for your friend by name. Keep a note on your phone or a small card in your wallet so you can pray it during a free moment at work or while waiting in line. Praying with your hands busy, perhaps while washing dishes or walking, can keep your mind from wandering and help the words settle into your heart.

Consider asking another friend or your church prayer group to pray alongside you. Sharing the request with others spreads the load and gives you a community to remember your friend with. Let your friend know you are praying, but do not pressure them to respond; sometimes a simple text saying “I am holding you before God today” is all the encouragement they need.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your friend and keep them through every hard hour. May his face shine on them with kindness, and may they feel the peace that passes understanding settle over their worried thoughts. May they know they are loved, seen, and carried, and may you be given the grace to walk beside them faithfully.
