This short morning prayer is for the moment you wake up carrying a hurt that someone else caused, or a memory that keeps replaying before you have even had coffee. It is meant to be prayed early, before the first conversation, message or meeting of the day, so that you bring your resentment to God before it has a chance to shape your tone. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Morning Prayer for Forgiving Others

Good morning, Lord. I come to you before the day starts pulling at me. Some of the people I will see today have hurt me, and a few of them are still on my mind. I feel the old anger when I think about what was said, what was left unsaid, and the promise that was broken. Please help me set that weight down here, where you can see it clearly and I do not have to carry it alone.

Father, I want to forgive, but I do not always know where to begin. Show me the person I am struggling with and give me the honesty to name what they did without rehearsing it over and over. Soften the part of me that wants them to feel the same pain. When I see them at work, at home, or in the store, let me greet them with a fair and kind heart, not a cold one. Give me the words I need and keep me from speaking in bitterness.

I also ask you to forgive me, Lord, for the ways I have held onto this too long and for the times I have judged someone without knowing their whole story. Let your mercy reach me first, so I can offer that same mercy to others today. Guard my thoughts through the hours ahead, and when resentment starts to rise again, remind me that I have already handed this to you. Thank you for loving me when I was unkind, and for teaching me how to love in return. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am still holding on to what was done to me, and I do not want it to decide how I treat people today. Help me release it into your hands again. Give me the strength to forgive the person who hurt me, and the patience to keep forgiving when the feeling comes back. Let your peace settle my thoughts before I speak or act. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul ties forgiveness to the way God has already forgiven us. Pray this verse by asking God to remind you of his mercy toward you, so that your kindness toward the person you are struggling with flows from gratitude rather than obligation.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

This verse links bearing with one another to forgiving as the Lord forgave you. As you pray it this morning, ask for patience with the people you will meet and for the grace to let small offenses pass without building a case against them.

Matthew 6:14-15

14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks plainly about the link between receiving forgiveness and extending it. Pray these words with humility, asking God to reveal any place where your heart is closed, and trusting him to open it before you step into the day.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

The psalmist describes God’s removal of our sins as distance that cannot be measured. Pray this verse when the past keeps returning to your mind, thanking God that he does not keep score the way you might, and asking him to help you do the same.

Luke 6:37

Don’t judge, and you won’t be judged. Don’t condemn, and you won’t be condemned. Set free, and you will be set free.

(WEB)

Jesus calls his followers to stop condemning and to release others. Pray this verse as you prepare for conversations, asking God to keep your judgments from hardening and to make you quick to pardon.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer in the first few minutes after you wake, before you check your phone or open your email. Sit on the edge of your bed or at the kitchen table with a cup of something warm in your hands, and let the quiet give the words room. If you have a specific person in mind, you might write their name on a slip of paper and place it under your mug, a small reminder to pray for them as you pass by the table through the day.

You might also ask someone you trust to pray this with you, or to pray for you on the days when forgiveness feels impossible. A spouse, a friend, or a member of your church can stand with you in this. Come back to the prayer in the evening as well, and notice whether God has been shaping your attitude during the hours in between.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who forgave you go before you into this day. May his mercy steady your heart when old hurts stir, and may his peace guard every word you speak. Let the people you meet see something of Christ in the way you treat them, and may you walk in freedom from the weight you were never meant to carry alone.
