This daily prayer for grieving families is written for those who are mourning a loss and need words to bring to God when their own words run out. Pray it in the morning to begin the day, in the evening when the house is quiet, or whenever the ache rises up. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for Grieving Families

Father, we come to You this morning carrying a weight we did not choose. Someone we love is gone, and the house feels wrong with their absence in every room. We wake up reaching for them before we remember, and then the remembering comes again. Be near us in the small moments: the first cup of coffee, the chair no one sits in, the phone call we almost make. Hold those of us who are sleeping badly and those who cannot cry, and those who cry without stopping.

Lord, give us strength for the practical things that grief makes so heavy: the paperwork, the phone calls, the decisions about belongings, the meals we forget to eat or eat without tasting. Help us accept help from neighbors and friends, and give us wisdom to know when to rest. Where anger, guilt, or regret sits in our hearts, meet us there without judgment. Teach us that we can bring every question to You honestly. Keep our children, our parents, and our friends in Your care, and let us lean on one another. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am hurting today and I do not have the words. You see the empty place where my loved one used to be. Carry what I cannot carry right now. Steady my breathing, steady my heart, and help me take the next small step. Remind me that You are close to the brokenhearted, even here. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the grief feels too heavy to hold alone. Ask God to draw near to your broken places today, and thank Him that nearness is His promise, not your achievement.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God in the moments when your heart feels torn open. Ask Him to bind up the specific wounds you are carrying, the ones no one else sees, and trust Him with the pace of healing.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and let Jesus speak comfort into your mourning. Pray it for yourself and for the others in your family who are grieving, asking that each of you would receive comfort in your own way.

Psalm 56:8

You count my wanderings. You put my tears into your bottle. Aren’t they in your book?

(WEB)

Pray this verse during a quiet moment when the tears come. Thank God that your sorrow is not overlooked, and ask Him to remember every tear for you as you wait for relief.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for the family, asking God to be the Father of compassion in your home. Ask Him to strengthen you so that, in time, you can comfort others who walk the same hard road.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many families find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the day’s demands begin. Choose a chair or a corner that is yours, keep a cup of tea or water nearby, and let your hands rest open in your lap or hold a photograph or object that belongs to the person you miss. If you are praying with others, take turns reading one paragraph each, or let the youngest person in the room say the closing word.

In the evening, you might pray the shorter version as you turn off the lights, or sit together on the porch or at the kitchen table and let each person name one thing that was hard that day. Invite a trusted friend, pastor, or church member to pray with you, too. Grieving families often find that sharing the prayer with someone else makes it easier to keep returning to it, even on the days when it feels too much.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who collects every tear keep each member of this family in His steady care. May He give rest to tired hearts, companionship to lonely evenings, and hope for the days ahead. May you know that you are not forgotten, and that the God of all comfort walks beside you one day at a time.
