This is a bedtime prayer for inner peace, written for the end of the day when your thoughts won’t settle and the to-do list keeps replaying. Pray it as written, read it slowly aloud, or use it as a starting point and put your own worries into your own words. Either way, it gives you a way to hand the day to God before you sleep.

Bedtime Prayer for Inner Peace

Father, the day is closing and I am bringing it to you. I replay conversations I wish had gone differently, I worry about money and the calendar for tomorrow, and I keep rehearsing things I cannot control. Some of it is still sitting heavy on my chest. I ask you to take it from my hands tonight, because I have carried it long enough.

Quiet my mind the way you quieted the storm. Settle my body so that the tightness in my shoulders can loosen, and let my breathing slow. Where I am anxious about the people I love, hold them for me. Where I feel I failed today, forgive me and remind me that my worth does not rise or fall with my performance. Let me rest in the truth that you are awake while I sleep.

Guard my sleep tonight from fear and from restless dreams. Keep watch over my home, the people under this roof, and anyone who is awake in pain right now. Give me enough peace to close my eyes and trust that morning will bring what I need for it. Thank you for the good things from today, even the small ones. Into your care I commit my body, my thoughts, and my night. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is loud. Take the worries I am holding and set them down in your hands. Be near me in this quiet and let me breathe slowly. Keep me safe through the night and give me enough peace to sleep. Thank you for today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting each phrase settle in. Ask God to make your sleep a place of safety rather than a place where fear takes over, and to let his protection be the last thing on your mind.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and name each worry you are carrying. Then bring each one to God in prayer, thanking him for what he has already given, and ask him to guard your heart and thoughts in place of the anxiety.

Psalm 46:10

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.”

(WEB)

Let this verse slow your breathing. Repeat it quietly, pausing between the phrases, and ask God to help you stop striving for a moment and simply rest in the fact that he is God.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your weariness to this verse as it is. Name the parts of the day that wore you out and ask Jesus to take that weight, trusting that the rest he offers is real even when your mind still feels busy.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by fixing your attention on God rather than on the list of problems. Ask him to keep your mind steady tonight, and let your trust in him become the thing you return to when worries rise again.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this in the same place each night, such as the edge of your bed or a chair by a lamp, so your body starts to recognize that the day is over. Before you begin, turn off the screen and set your phone across the room. Sit with your hands open on your lap or resting on your knees, which can help you let go of the day physically as you speak.

If someone shares your home, you could pray a line of this together, or ask them to pray it for you on nights when you feel stuck. Keep a small notebook by the bed and write down the one worry you most want to hand to God. Read the prayer, then close the notebook, and let it stay there until morning.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep watch over you tonight. May the peace of God, which surpasses understanding, settle your heart and quiet every restless thought. May you wake refreshed, knowing you were held through the dark. Rest well, and be at peace.
