This night prayer for kindness is written for the end of the day, when you are tired and the hours behind you hold moments you wish had gone differently. It asks God to soften your heart, forgive what was careless or cold, and make you gentler with the people you will see tomorrow. Pray it in bed with the lights off, at the kitchen table after everyone else has gone to sleep, or on the drive home. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words.

Night Prayer for Kindness

Lord, the day is over, and I bring it to you as it really was. Some of it was good. I laughed with someone, I was patient with a child who was slow to get dressed, and I finished the work I had promised to finish. But there were other moments too. I snapped at my husband over something small. I rolled my eyes at a coworker. I walked past a stranger who needed a word, and I told myself I was too busy. Forgive me for the sharpness, the impatience, and the times I cared more about being right than about being kind.

Thank you for the people who were kind to me today. Thank you for the friend who asked how I was really doing, the cashier who smiled when I looked worn out, and the neighbor who waved from the driveway. Let me remember those gifts and let them shape how I treat others. Be near to the ones I worry about tonight, the ones who are sick, grieving, lonely, or simply carrying more than they can say. Give them rest, and let me be a small part of your answer to their needs when I wake up.

Keep me through the night. Quiet my mind so I can sleep, and guard my heart from bitterness while I rest. When morning comes, put gentleness in my hands and patience in my voice. Help me notice the person who is struggling, and give me the courage to speak up or simply to stay near. I want to love the way you love, freely and without keeping score. Thank you for your mercy, which is new every morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am too tired for a long prayer tonight. Forgive me for the unkind words and cold moments of this day, and thank you for forgiving me anyway. Soften my heart before I sleep. Let me wake with a readier spirit to be gentle with the people you place in front of me. Keep those I love safe through the dark hours, and give me rest. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly before you pray, and let it name the standard you are measuring your day against. Then ask God to give you the same forgiveness and tenderness toward the person who wounded you, and toward yourself for how you failed.

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to clothe you with the qualities of Christ, especially compassion and kindness. Name one area where you need that clothing tomorrow, such as a difficult conversation or a tired afternoon with the kids.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This is a verse for the last moment before sleep. Pray it as a release, handing God the worries about tomorrow’s interactions and trusting him to keep you safe while you rest.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When you have failed to be kind today, this passage reminds you that God’s mercy starts fresh each morning. Thank him for that renewal, and ask him to let it shape how you greet the next day’s people.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple summary of what God asks of you. Ask him to help you act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly, especially with those who are easy to overlook or hard to love.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a steady moment at the end of the day, after the dishes are done and the lights are dimmed. Sit on the edge of your bed or in a chair you use every night, and keep a small notebook nearby. As you pray, you might write down one unkind moment you want to release and one kindness you saw, so the evening ends with both honesty and thanks.

If you share a home, consider praying the longer version with your spouse, a roommate, or a child old enough to join in. You might take turns naming one person each of you wants to treat with more gentleness tomorrow. Anyone can also pray this on behalf of someone else, asking God to bring them rest and a kinder spirit toward the people in their life.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you through the night fill your heart with gentleness and let you rest without fear. May his mercy meet you again at sunrise, and may the people you meet tomorrow find in you a steady kindness that points them back to him.
