This is a written prayer for loving others, the people who are easy to love and the people who test your patience. It is meant to be prayed when you feel stretched thin by a difficult relationship, when resentment is creeping in, or when you simply want your heart to be more generous toward the people around you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Christian Prayer for Loving Others

Father, you have loved me long before I ever loved you, and I come to you because I cannot produce this kind of love on my own. You know the people I find hardest to be patient with, the coworker who takes credit for my work, the relative who never seems to listen, the neighbor whose habits drive me up the wall. Soften the places in me that have grown hard. Show me where pride or hurt has crowded out compassion, and help me name those things honestly before you.

Teach me to see others the way you see them, as people carrying their own burdens, their own fears and their own longings for belonging. When I am tempted to write someone off, remind me that you have not written me off. Give me the patience to listen before I speak, the humility to admit when I am wrong, and the courage to act kindly even when I do not feel like it. Let my words be gentle and my actions be steady, so that the people around me experience something of your faithfulness through me.

Above all, fill me with your love, because love that comes from you does not run out when people disappoint me. Help me forgive the way you have forgiven me, and help me pray for those who hurt me instead of rehearsing their faults. Make me a person who blesses rather than burdens, who notices the lonely, who makes room at the table. In the name of Jesus, who loved to the very end, I pray. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I have run out of patience and I need yours. Help me see the person in front of me the way you see them, worn down and worth your care. Soften my tone, slow my reactions and give me a kind word where I would normally offer a sharp one. Let your love move through me right now, in this ordinary moment. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Read this slowly and turn each phrase into a question for your own heart. Ask God where you are impatient, unkind or quick to take offense, and let the verse become a mirror rather than a standard you measure others by.

John 13:34

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another.

(WEB)

Jesus gives this as a command and also as a pattern, pointing to his own love as the measure. Pray that you would love others in the same way he has loved you, which means asking him to supply what you lack.

Colossians 3:12-13

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul describes the clothing of a believer as compassion, kindness and patience. Pray through the list and ask God to help you put on each quality today, especially where forgiveness is needed.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

This verse asks for affection and honor toward others, not just tolerance. Pray that God would make you someone who genuinely delights in the people in your life and who puts their good before your own comfort.

1 John 4:19

We love him, because he first loved us.

(WEB)

John reminds us that our love for others begins with God’s love for us. Pray this verse as a reminder that you do not have to manufacture affection, because you can receive it from the one who loved you first.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the messages and demands of the day begin to pile up. Sit somewhere quiet, perhaps with a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, and let the warmth remind you that you are being cared for before you are asked to care for anyone else. If there is one specific person on your mind, speak their name in the prayer and ask God to bless them by name.

You might also pray it in a moment of tension, such as in the car before walking into a difficult meeting or outside the room where a hard conversation is about to happen. A spouse, friend or small group could pray it together, taking turns reading a line each and adding names of people they are struggling to love well. Keep a short note of what God shows you, and return to it when old irritation resurfaces.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who loved you first fill your heart with patience, kindness and quiet courage today. May he give you eyes to see the people around you as he sees them, and hands ready to serve them. May you be a source of peace in every room you enter, and may his love be seen in you.
