This night prayer is for anyone who lies down with a decision still weighing on them, whether it is a hard conversation, a money choice, a job offer, or simply the memory of a day where you said yes when you should have said no. Pray it at bedtime, once the lights are off and the day has finally slowed down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Night Prayer for Making Wise Choices

Lord, the day is over, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of my choices today were good, and some I would take back if I could. I did not always stop to ask what you thought before I acted. Thank you that your mercy meets me in my failures, and that you are not finished with me yet. Forgive me for the moments I trusted my own quick judgment more than your wisdom.

Now I ask you for a clear heart as I rest. Show me which choices are still open to me, and give me the sense to see the difference between what is urgent and what only feels urgent at eleven at night. Where I am torn between two paths, quiet my fear and give me peace about the next step. Let me remember that you know the decisions I face better than I do, and that you have promised to give wisdom to anyone who asks.

Watch over me while I sleep. Guard my mind from worry that keeps me circling the same question, and protect the people I love from the consequences of choices I have not yet made. Tomorrow I will need your help again, so I place the morning in your hands before I close my eyes. Keep me steady, keep me honest, and lead me in the way I should go. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and my mind is full of choices I have not settled. Give me wisdom for the decisions in front of me, and show me the next right step. Calm the worry that keeps me awake, and remind me that I do not have to carry every outcome alone. Protect me through the night, and help me wake ready to trust you again. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly, letting the promise sink in before you name your specific decision. It reminds you that asking for wisdom is itself an act of faith, and that God gives generously rather than grudgingly.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand over the part of the decision you cannot control. As you pray it at night, name the places where you have been leaning on your own understanding, and ask God to make your paths straight.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse fits the close of the day well. Pray it as you settle into bed, asking God to give you the rest that comes from trusting him with what you have not yet resolved.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

When you feel driven to fix every problem before morning, let this verse loosen your grip. Pray that God would give you rest, and that your choices would come from trust rather than anxious striving.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are unsure which way to turn. Ask God to speak clearly, and to help you listen for his direction when the next step is still hidden in the dark.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed time each evening, perhaps just after you brush your teeth or before you turn off the bedside lamp. Keep a notebook on the nightstand so that when a decision comes to mind, you can write it down and pray about it by name instead of letting it churn. Sitting on the edge of the bed with your hands open on your knees can help your body settle while your mind slows.

If you share a home with a spouse, roommate, or child, you might pray this prayer together, taking turns with the lines about the decisions each of you faces. A trusted friend or small group can also pray it for you on nights when you feel too worn out to find the words yourself. Let others carry some of the weight with you.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gives wisdom freely guide the heart of this one tonight. May he quiet every anxious thought and give them rest that does not depend on having every answer. And may the light of his presence meet them at the first waking moment, ready to walk the next step with courage.
