This page offers prayers for an upcoming exam, written for the nights before a test, the early mornings of exam week, and the minutes before you walk into the room. Pray the main prayer slowly, read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words. Either way, it is meant to bring your fear, your effort and your mind before God.

Prayers for an Upcoming Exam

Father, you know the test that is coming, and you know how much I have studied and how much I still don’t know. My mind feels crowded and my stomach feels tight. Please settle my thoughts so that I can think clearly. Help me remember what I have learned, and help me stay calm when a question looks unfamiliar. Keep me from freezing, from rushing, and from second-guessing answers I already got right.

I also ask you to hold my results loosely in my hands. I want to do well, and I ask you to help me do my best, but my worth does not rise or fall with a grade. Remind me that you are with me in the exam room and in whatever comes after it. Thank you that I can bring you the small details of this week as well as the large ones. Give me honesty about what I know, patience with what I don’t, and peace when I walk out the door. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my head is full and my heart is racing. Quiet my mind right now. Help me recall what I need, slow my breathing, and steady my hands. Go with me into this room and into each question. I trust you with the outcome, and I give you my effort today. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When exam anxiety builds, pray this passage by naming each worry out loud and then thanking God for one thing you can see him doing. Ask for the peace it describes to guard your thoughts while you study and sit the test.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel tempted to rely only on your own cramming or on what others expect. Pray it by asking God to direct your study time, your choices and the way you approach each section of the exam.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Pray this when fear tells you that you are alone in the pressure. Speak it back to God as a promise, and ask him to help you feel his strength in the moments when your confidence drops.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

This verse fits the moment you realize you do not know an answer. Ask God for wisdom to understand the question, recall what matters most, and choose a clear and honest response.

Psalm 121:1-2

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.

(WEB)

Pray this psalm as you look up from your notes or your desk. Lift your eyes and ask God to be your help in the hours ahead, reminding yourself that your help does not depend on your own performance.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray the main prayer the night before the exam, sitting at the desk where you studied, with your notes closed and your materials packed. Ending the day with prayer can help you sleep instead of rereading the same page. If you have a few minutes before the test, read the shorter prayer silently while you sit in your seat, with your hands resting flat on the desk to help your body settle.

You can also ask a parent, friend, youth leader or small group to pray with you by phone or in person. Let them know the exact exam and time, and ask them to pray that you will remember what you have learned. Their prayers can carry you when your own words feel thin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into the exam room and stay with you through every question. May your mind be clear, your breath be steady, and your heart be at rest in his care. Whatever the result, may you know that you are deeply loved and fully held.
