This simple prayer for my health is for anyone who wants to bring their body, their energy and their worries about illness to God in plain words. Pray it when you wake up unsure how you feel, before a doctor’s appointment, during a long stretch of recovery, or at night when you cannot sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for My Health

Lord, you know my body better than I do. You know the tiredness that does not lift, the ache I try to ignore, and the fear I feel when I think about test results. I bring my health to you today, and I ask for your healing where it is needed. Strengthen my heart, steady my breathing, and give my body the rest and nourishment it requires. Guide the doctors, nurses and caregivers who help me, and give them wisdom and care.

Where I feel weak, be my strength. Where I feel afraid, be my peace. If my illness is still with me, help me trust that you are with me in it and that nothing I face is beyond your reach. Give me patience with the slow parts of healing, honesty with the people who love me, and the courage to take the next small step. Thank you for every good day and every ordinary gift that keeps me going. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worried about my health right now, and I do not have many words. Please heal what is broken, calm what is anxious, and give me strength for this hour. Be near to me and keep me in your care. Help me rest in the knowledge that you hear me even when I can only whisper. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 103:2-3

2 Praise the LORD, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits; 3 who forgives all your sins; who heals all your diseases…

(WEB)

Use this passage to thank God for the health you still have while asking him to heal what is not well. David reminds his own soul not to forget the Lord’s benefits, and you can pray the same reminder over your body and mind.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this when your energy is gone and you feel too weak to keep going. Ask God to give you strength in place of your own failing reserves, trusting that he does not grow tired.

Jeremiah 17:14

Heal me, O the LORD, and I will be healed. Save me, and I will be saved; for you are my praise.

(WEB)

Jeremiah cries out for healing and salvation, and his honesty gives you permission to ask plainly. Bring your specific illness before God and name it, trusting him to be the one who makes you well.

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of the Lord sustaining the sick and restoring them on their bed of illness. Pray it for yourself on the hard days, and for anyone you love who is lying sick at home or in hospital.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

James encourages the sick to call for the elders and to pray in faith, with the Lord raising them up. If you are able, ask a trusted pastor, friend or small group to pray with you, and let this passage shape how you ask for help.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before the day’s demands begin, or in the evening as a way of handing your body back to God before sleep. Sit in a chair you find comfortable, and keep a glass of water nearby as a small reminder to look after yourself. If you are in pain, you can pray with your hand resting on the place that hurts, which makes the words feel more personal.

If you are praying for someone else’s health, read the prayer aloud while they rest nearby, or ask if you may place a hand on their shoulder while you pray. You can also write the prayer on a card and keep it on the fridge or in your bag, so you have it ready when a worry rises up unexpectedly. Pray it as often as you need, and do not feel you must finish well or say it perfectly.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who heals and sustains you hold your body and your spirit in his care. May he give you rest when you are weary, hope when you are afraid, and strength for each new day. May you know that you are seen, known and loved, whatever your health looks like today.
