This evening prayer is for your best friend, for the day that is ending and the night that is coming. Pray it at bedtime, in the car on the way home, or at the close of a phone call after you have said goodnight. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words what is on your heart.

Evening Prayer for My Best Friend

Lord, thank you for the day that is closing now. Thank you for every good moment we shared, for the laughter, for the honest conversations, and for the small kindnesses that we often take for granted. Thank you that my friend is known by you completely, down to the worries they did not mention and the joys they did not have time to share. Be near them tonight. Where there is fear, give them courage. Where there is tiredness, give them rest that goes deeper than sleep.

Father, I bring you the things weighing on my friend’s heart. I do not know every burden, but you do. Carry what they could not carry today. Settle the thoughts that circle when the house goes quiet, and remind them that they do not have to solve everything before morning. Guard their going out and their coming in, their families, their work, and their health. Keep them safe through the dark hours and wake them with hope when the light returns. Let them know, even in the stillness, that they are loved and not alone. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is tired tonight, and so am I. Hold them while they sleep. Quiet whatever is restless in them and steady what feels unsteady. Watch over their rest and their dreams, and give them a morning that feels lighter than this evening did. Thank you for the gift of this friendship. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for your friend’s sleep. Ask God to grant them the peace of lying down without fear, trusting that he is the one who keeps them safe through the night.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this over your friend’s coming and going. Thank God that his watch over them does not pause at dusk, and ask him to guard their steps tomorrow as well as tonight.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of rest as a gift from God. Pray that your friend would receive sleep as grace rather than something they must earn by finishing everything first.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your friend’s weariness to Jesus in prayer. Ask him to extend this invitation to them personally, especially where they carry more than they can name.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this for your friend’s anxieties. Ask that whatever worries they have brought to God today would be handed over to him, and that his peace would guard their heart and mind through the night.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet moment after you have turned off the lights or put the phone down. You might sit on the edge of your bed, kneel beside it, or stay in the car for a minute before going inside. Keeping your hands open in your lap, or holding something small that reminds you of your friend, can help your attention settle on them rather than drifting to your own list.

If you can, pray this prayer together with another friend or family member who also loves your best friend. Each person can read a paragraph, or take turns naming one thing they are asking God to do. Afterward, consider sending your friend a short message saying you prayed for them tonight. Sometimes knowing someone thought of them at bedtime is itself a comfort.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord watch over your friend tonight and keep them in his care. May they rest deeply, wake refreshed, and know that the one who never sleeps is nearby in every hour of the dark.
