This evening prayer is for the close of the day when you want to hand your brother over to God before you sleep. Pray it at bedtime, at the kitchen table after everyone has gone quiet, or in the car on the way home. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about what is on your heart.

Evening Prayer for My Brother

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring my brother to you as the light goes out. You saw every hour of his day, the work that wore him down, the conversations that went well and the ones that did not. Hold him now in the quiet. Where he is weary, give him rest. Where he is anxious about money, health, or the future, take those worries out of his hands and into yours, because you know what he needs before he asks.

Father, I also ask you to keep him safe through the night. Guard his sleep and his home, and surround him with your peace when the house is dark. If there is anything he carried today that he could not name, I ask you to lift it from him. If there is anything he has been hiding from others or from himself, meet him there with patience and truth. Let him wake tomorrow knowing he was not forgotten.

Thank you for the good things from this day, even the small ones: a meal shared, a laugh, a moment of sunlight. Thank you for my brother’s life and for the way you have kept him all this time. Help me to rest in your care for him, too, and to trust that you are at work even when I cannot see it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my brother is tired, and so am I. Bring him rest tonight and quiet every worry that keeps him awake. Keep him safe in his sleep, and let him wake knowing you are near. Thank you for today and for the gift of him in my life. Into your hands I entrust him now. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly as you lie down or sit in the quiet. Pray that your brother would rest in the same security the psalmist describes, trusting God to keep him safe through the night.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that rest is a gift from God and not something earned by exhausting yourself. Ask God to teach your brother to receive sleep as grace rather than a reward for finishing everything.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks these words to anyone who is worn out. Pray that your brother would hear this invitation personally and bring his weariness to Jesus instead of carrying it alone.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and promises God’s peace. Pray that whatever worries your brother is holding would be turned into requests to God, and that God’s peace would guard his heart and mind.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

These lines describe a God who never sleeps and never dozes off. Pray that your brother would feel that watchful care through the night, and that you would be reminded of it too.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the day has settled, such as after the last dishes are done or just before you turn off the lamp. Sit or kneel somewhere comfortable, and you might hold something small in your hands, like a cup of tea or a cross, to keep your attention from drifting. Speak the prayer slowly, pausing after each concern so you can picture your brother and what he is facing.

If you live with a spouse, a parent, or a friend who knows your brother, invite them to pray it with you or to add their own words. You might also text your brother a short line such as “Praying for you tonight” so he knows you are thinking of him. Praying together, even from different rooms, can make the prayer feel shared rather than private.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord watch over your brother as he sleeps and keep him from every harm. May his rest be deep, his morning be gentle, and his heart be held by a love that does not fail. May the God who never slumbers be near to him tonight and always.
