This daily prayer for my country is written for anyone who wants to bring their nation before God each day, whether you are worried about its leaders, its divisions, or simply grateful for the place you call home. Pray it in the morning with your first cup of coffee, or in the evening once the news has quieted down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add the names of people, places and concerns that weigh on you most.
Daily Prayer for My Country
Lord, you are the God who rules over every nation and who knows each person who calls it home. I come to you today on behalf of the country I live in. I thank you for the freedoms we enjoy, for the land that feeds us, and for the ordinary kindnesses people show one another on crowded trains and in quiet neighborhoods. Forgive us where we have forgotten you, where we have trusted in our own strength, and where we have turned against our neighbors instead of loving them.
Be near to those who lead us, whether in the capital or in the town council meeting down the road. Give them wisdom they did not earn and humility they cannot manufacture on their own. Guard the honest judges, the teachers, the nurses on night shifts, and the families who are struggling to make rent this month. Bring healing to communities torn by violence, poverty, or grief, and let the vulnerable find someone to stand beside them. Teach us to disagree without contempt and to seek the good of the whole, not only our own side. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I lift my country to you right now. Protect those who serve in its government, its hospitals, and its schools. Heal what is broken between neighbors and between groups who no longer speak to one another. Give the people in authority honest hearts, and give the rest of us patience and courage to do our part. Let justice and mercy meet in our streets. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
1 Timothy 2:1-2

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a fixed moment each day to pray, such as while the kettle heats, on your commute, or before you open your phone. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down a name, a news story or a need that comes to mind, and bring that list back to God the next day. Many people find it helps to hold a cup of tea or a worn Bible in their hands, giving the body something to do while the heart settles into prayer.
You do not have to pray alone. Invite a spouse, a roommate, a small group from church or a friend across the country to pray this prayer with you, either in person or by phone. Agreeing together on one request each week, such as peace in a particular region or wisdom for a local school board, can keep your prayers focused and encouraging to one another.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over every nation keep watch over your country and over you within it. May he give you a calm heart, a clear mind and a love for your neighbors that outlasts disagreement. May the nation you love be blessed with peace, justice and hope, and may you be a faithful presence in its common life.
