This evening prayer is for the decisions that have followed you through the day and are still waiting for you at bedtime. Pray it at the end of the day, once the house is quiet or before you turn out the light, when the choices you could not settle are most likely to keep you awake. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the same concerns.

Evening Prayer for My Decisions

Lord, the day is ending, and some of my decisions have not ended with it. I have weighed the options, made lists in my head, and gone around the same questions until my thoughts are tired. I bring them to you now: the job offer I have not answered, the money I still need to divide, the conversation I keep putting off, and the choice I am afraid of getting wrong. Show me what is true and what is only fear. Where I have already done my best, help me rest in that and stop asking the same question again tonight.

Father, I confess that I want certainty before I will trust you. I want to see the whole road before I take a single step. But you have never asked me to know everything. You ask me to walk with you one day at a time. So I give you the parts I cannot see, and I ask that you guide the decisions that are still open, both the large ones and the small ones I have not even named. Quiet my mind, correct my motives, and let me sleep without pretending I have solved what only you can carry.

Thank you that you have been faithful today, even in the moments I did not notice. Thank you for the people who helped me think clearly and for the good things that happened without my planning. Guard my sleep tonight. Keep the anxious thoughts from crowding in at three in the morning, and wake me with a clear head and a willing heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and still deciding. I give you the choice in front of me and the ones behind me that I cannot undo. Show me what to do next, and help me rest until morning. I trust you with what I cannot see. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray these words when your own understanding feels like the only tool you have. Ask God to help you lean on him instead of rehearsing every outcome, and to make your paths straight as you go.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse as you lie down. Name the decisions you are still carrying, then let the verse be a reminder that rest does not depend on having everything settled first.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this for wisdom on the specific choice before you. Be honest about where you need direction, and ask without apology, trusting that God gives generously.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when worry has been keeping you up. Thank him that he gives sleep to those he loves, and ask him to still the mind that keeps working on problems it cannot solve tonight.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Turn this passage into a short prayer, presenting each open decision by name. Ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind, and let that peace settle the thoughts that are still spinning.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time just before bed, when the day’s noise has faded. Sit on the edge of the bed or in a favorite chair, and keep a pen and paper nearby. Write down the decisions you are praying about, one line each, and read the prayer slowly while your eyes move down the list. If a decision still feels unclear, place your hand on the paper as a way of giving it to God.

You might also pray this with someone you trust, such as a spouse, a close friend, or a prayer partner. Ask them to pray the prayer over you, or take turns reading the sections aloud. Having another person speak the words can help when your own mind feels too tired to find them, and it reminds you that you are not carrying the decision alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over the night keep watch over your decisions as well. May he give you wisdom for what is ahead, rest for what is unfinished, and a quiet heart for tonight. Sleep well, and wake to the new morning knowing you are held.
