This is a Christian prayer for my grandchildren, written for grandparents who want to bring their children’s children before God by name. You can pray it aloud as written, at bedtime, during a visit, or on the drive home from school pickup. You can also use it as a starting point and speak your own words where the prayer doesn’t quite fit.

Christian Prayer for My Grandchildren

Father, you know each of these children by name, and you knew them before they were born. I bring them to you today with a grandparent’s full heart. Protect them from harm on the roads, in the playground, and in the places I will never see. Keep their bodies healthy and their minds curious, and give their parents patience and wisdom for the long days of raising them.

Shape their hearts toward kindness and honesty. When they face friendships that go wrong, teach them to recognize good company. When they are tempted to chase what looks impressive instead of what is true, draw them back to you. Let them grow up knowing they are loved without condition, by you and by the family that surrounds them. Give them a faith of their own that holds when I am no longer there to remind them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I lift up my grandchildren to you right now. Watch over them today, guard their steps and their hearts, and give them a sense of your nearness. Surround them with people who love them well, and let them grow in wisdom and in grace. Thank you for them. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

Children are described here as a gift from the Lord. Pray this as you thank God for your grandchildren, asking him to see them as the treasures they are and to help you receive them with gratitude.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the lasting shape of early training. Pray it for the habits, values and faith your grandchildren are learning now, and ask God to bless the ways their parents and you guide them.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Here the psalmist promises the Lord’s protection coming and going. Use it as a prayer for their travels, their daily comings and goings, and every hour you cannot personally watch over them.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

God is pictured as a shepherd who gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close. Pray this for any grandchild who feels small, tired or afraid, asking the Lord to hold them gently.

3 John 1:4

I have no greater joy than this, to hear about my children walking in truth.

(WEB)

The apostle John rejoiced when his children walked in the truth. Let this verse become your own joy and prayer, asking God to bring each grandchild to a living, steady faith.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many grandparents find that bedtime or the quiet moment after a phone call works well. Sit somewhere you can be still, perhaps with a photo of the children in your hands or close by. Pray the longer version slowly, pausing after each concern to name that child specifically. The prayer grows richer the more personal you make it.

You might also invite a spouse, an adult child, or another grandparent to pray it with you, or keep a copy in your Bible for the days you are apart. Some grandparents write the names at the top and pray one line for each child over the week. Let the prayer be something you return to again and again, rather than a one-time request.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless these children and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and be gracious to them. May they grow in the knowledge of his love, and may they know, all their days, that someone who loves them has been asking God to be near.
