This bedtime prayer for my mother is written to be spoken at the end of the day, when the house is quiet and the work of the day is finished. You can read it aloud exactly as it is written, or use it as a starting point and change the words so they sound like your own heart. It asks God to receive your mother’s worries, to give her rest, and to keep watch over her through the night.

Bedtime Prayer for My Mother

Lord, thank You for the gift of this day and for the nights You give us to rest. I bring my mother to You now, the way she has been carried through every ordinary hour of her life. She has carried so much: the errands, the phone calls, the things she could not fix and the people she could not reach. Take those burdens from her shoulders tonight. Where her mind is still turning over conversations and unfinished tasks, quiet her thoughts and remind her that You are already at work in what she cannot see.

Father, be near to her body as well. Ease any pain, settle any restlessness, and let her sleep come easily and deeply. If she is anxious about her health, her finances, or the people she loves, meet her in that fear and give her a steady peace that does not depend on circumstances. Guard her going out and her coming in, and keep her safe in the hours when she cannot see who is near. Let her wake refreshed, with her heart lighter than it was when she lay down.

Thank You for the faithfulness she has shown to us, and for the faithfulness You have shown to her. Hold her tonight as a good shepherd holds the flock. We trust her to You, knowing that You never sleep and never lose track of her. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my mother is resting now under Your watch. Calm her worries, ease her body, and give her a deep and peaceful sleep. Keep her safe through the night and let her wake to a new morning full of Your mercy. Thank You for her life and for the love she has given. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Pray this verse slowly over your mother as you lie down beside her in thought. Ask God to grant her the kind of sleep that comes from trusting Him to keep watch while she rests.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Read this verse as a reminder that your mother does not have to earn her rest. Thank God that He gives sleep to those He loves, and ask Him to release her from the habit of working late into the night.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use these lines to pray for your mother’s safety through the night. Ask the Lord, who never slumbers, to keep her from harm while she sleeps and to watch over her in every hour.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this passage over whatever worries your mother carries into bed. Ask God to replace her anxious thoughts with a peace that steadies her heart when her mind wants to race.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Ask God to keep your mother’s mind fixed on Him as she drifts toward sleep. Pray that her thoughts would settle in trust rather than fear, and that she would find calm in the Lord’s steady presence.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when your mother is settling in for the night, perhaps after the lights are dimmed and before she turns off the bedside lamp. You might sit beside her bed, rest a hand on her shoulder or hold her hand, and pray quietly while she listens. If she is alone, you can pray for her from another room or over the phone, speaking the words slowly so she can join in her heart.

Invite others to pray with you, whether a spouse, an adult child, or a friend who loves her. Taking turns reading one paragraph each can make the prayer feel like a family gift rather than a single voice. Afterward, leave a glass of water or a small note nearby, so the last thing she sees or touches is a reminder that she is loved and held.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your mother and keep her this night. May He make His face shine upon her, give her rest that restores body and spirit, and wake her to a morning filled with grace. May she know, as she closes her eyes, that she is loved and never forgotten.
