This evening prayer is written for the moment you want to bring your sister before God at the end of the day. Pray it at bedtime, once the house is quiet and the day’s noise has settled, or whenever you are lying awake thinking about her. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Evening Prayer for My Sister

Lord, I come to you as the day ends and I bring my sister to you. You know the things she carried today, the conversations that weighed on her, the decisions she is still turning over, and the worries she did not say out loud. Hold her now. Let her set down what she could not finish, and let her rest in the knowledge that you are still at work when she is not able to be.

I thank you for her. Thank you for the years we have shared, for the ways she has shown up for me, and for the small kindnesses that never made the news but mattered deeply. Thank you for the food on her table, for the roof over her head, and for the people who love her. Help her remember, in the quiet, that she is known and cared for by you.

Guard her through the night. Where she is anxious, quiet her heart. Where she is tired, give her sleep that truly restores. Where fear tries to wake her at three in the morning, remind her that you do not slumber or sleep. Keep her safe in body and mind, and let morning find her refreshed and ready for whatever you have prepared. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my sister is tired and I am asking you to carry her tonight. Give her rest, ease her worries, and keep her safe until morning. Thank you for loving her more than I ever could. Let her wake knowing she was held. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this for your sister as you picture her lying down to sleep. Ask God to make the peace she needs real to her, so that she can close her eyes without carrying every unresolved thing into the dark.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God to keep watch over her while she cannot watch over herself. It is a steadying reminder that her protection does not depend on her staying awake.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your sister’s weariness to Jesus in these words. Name the specific burdens she is carrying, and invite her to lay them down with him at the end of the day.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this for your sister’s anxious thoughts. Ask that the peace of God would guard her heart and mind, especially in the moments when worry tries to take over.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Thank God with your sister in mind for mercies that are new each morning. Ask that she would wake tomorrow able to see fresh evidence of his faithfulness.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as after you turn off the lights or just before you go to bed. Sit somewhere comfortable and keep a glass of water or a small object nearby, perhaps something that reminds you of your sister. Holding it in your hands can help you stay focused when your mind wanders to the day’s details.

Consider inviting others to pray this with you, or praying it on your sister’s behalf with a spouse, close friend, or parent who knows her well. You might also send her a short text afterward saying you prayed for her tonight. Often the simplest message is the one that lets her know she is not carrying things alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your sister and keep her through this night. May he lift the weight from her shoulders, quiet every fear, and let her sleep with a settled heart. May she wake to a new morning, knowing she is loved, watched over, and held close by the God who never leaves her.
