This daily prayer for our church is written for anyone who wants to bring their congregation before God each day, whether you sit in the pew, serve on a team, or simply love the people who gather with you on Sunday. Pray it in the morning with your coffee, during a lunch break, or at the close of the day as you think back on who you have seen and spoken with. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the people and needs you know best.
Daily Prayer for Our Church
Lord, we come to you today for our church family. You know every name on our rolls and every name that is not written down anywhere but is still written on your heart. Be near to the ones who are grieving, the ones waiting on test results, the ones who lie awake wondering if they are enough. Give them the sense of your presence before they have to ask for it.
Make our leaders wise and gentle, Father. Give our pastors clear thinking for the sermons they prepare and the hard conversations they carry, and rest for their own weary bodies. Help our deacons, our teachers, our worship team, and the volunteers who set up chairs and wash the coffee pot without being thanked. Let our meetings be marked by listening more than arguing, and let us remember that the work belongs to you. Keep our children safe, our young people curious about you, and our older members strengthened in faith. Make us a people who show up for one another, who forgive quickly, and who welcome the stranger at the door as if they were already family. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, bless our church today. Be with the sick and the lonely, the new and the tired, and the ones who have stopped coming and whose names we miss. Give our leaders strength, our volunteers joy, and our families peace. Make us kind to each other and faithful to you. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Ephesians 4:3
Being eager to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
(WEB)
Pray this verse for unity in our church, asking God to help us keep the peace that binds us together when opinions differ and patience runs thin. It names a discipline, not just a feeling, so pray for the humility to choose it.
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.
(WEB)
Use this verse to ask that our members would encourage and build up one another this week. Pray for the specific people you know who need a word of kindness, and for your own willingness to be the one who speaks it.
Romans 12:10
In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…
(WEB)
Bring this verse before God for the affection and respect that should mark our fellowship. Ask him to help us honor one another above our own preferences, especially those we find difficult to love.
Philippians 1:3-5
3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now…
(WEB)
Paul wrote these words with gratitude for his partners in the gospel. Pray them as thanks for the people of our church who have walked with you in the work of faith, and ask God to keep that partnership strong.
Hebrews 10:24-25
24 Let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good works, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as you see the Day approaching.
(WEB)
This passage speaks of stirring one another to love and good works and not giving up meeting together. Pray for the motivation to attend, serve, and encourage, especially when the week has been long and the pew feels far away.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it easiest to pray this prayer in the first ten minutes of the day, before the phone and the inbox take over. Sit somewhere quiet with your Bible or a notebook nearby, and keep a short list of names beside you so you can pause on the people who come to mind. If you have a church directory or the prayer list from the bulletin, let your eyes move slowly down it as you read.
Your hands can help you stay present. Hold a pen and write one name you want to remember, or hold a cup of tea and let its warmth remind you of the people who have fed you in the faith. Invite a friend from church to pray it with you by phone or over a meal, or share it in your small group so others can use it too. Prayer for a congregation grows stronger when more than one person carries it.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless our church and keep it. May he make his face shine on every member, gather the scattered, comfort the broken, and send each of us out into the week carrying his peace. May the grace of Christ be with all who gather in his name.
