This evening prayer is for asking God to bless the people you share your streets, school, church, workplace and neighborhood with as the day ends. Pray it at bedtime, at the dinner table, or on your walk home, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.

Evening Prayer for Our Community

Lord, as this day closes, we bring our community before you. Thank you for the ordinary goods of this day: the bread on the table, the bus that came on time, the neighbor who waved from the porch, the teacher who stayed late with a struggling child. Thank you that you saw every one of us, even when we did not see each other.

We ask you to watch over the families who are awake tonight worrying about bills, a sick parent, a job that may not last, or a child who has not come home yet. Be near the nurses on night shift, the drivers on lonely roads, the officers and firefighters on call, and the people sleeping outside in the cold. Keep our homes safe from fire, theft and violence, and make us a watchful, caring people who notice when someone is struggling.

Where we have been unkind, impatient or quick to judge in this community, forgive us, and help us make things right in the morning. Heal the divisions between us, soften our hearts toward those who think differently, and give our leaders wisdom to serve rather than to rule. Let peace settle over our streets tonight, and let us wake tomorrow ready to love well. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, as the evening settles, we ask you to hold our community in your care. Protect those who are working tonight, comfort those who are grieving or afraid, and forgive the wrongs we have done to one another today. Give us rest, and let us wake to serve our neighbors well. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a way of handing the night over to God. Name the parts of your community you are most worried about, then say that you can lie down and sleep because God is the one keeping watch over them.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Use this verse to remember that the city, the school board, the hospital and the neighborhood association cannot hold together by human effort alone. Ask God to build and guard the places where you live and work.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

This verse was written to exiles who were told to seek the welfare of the place where they lived. Pray it for your town, asking God to make its prosperity and peace your own concern tonight.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this passage slowly when your mind is racing with the day’s problems. Bring each concern about the community to God in prayer, and ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind when you put them down.

Romans 12:18

If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the relationships that strain under the pressure of daily life. Ask God to help you be a peacemaker in your street, your workplace and your church, especially with people you find difficult.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer after you have turned off the lights in the kitchen and before you go to bed. Sitting at the table with a cup of tea works well, or standing at a window and looking out at the houses where your neighbors are settling in. If you have children, you can pray it with them and let them add the names of people they saw today.

Keep a small notebook by your bed and jot down a name or situation each evening, such as a coworker’s surgery or a family moving away. Read this prayer over those names, and invite a friend or small group to pray it on the same night so your community is lifted up by many voices at once.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over your community tonight. May he guard the sleeping and the waking, bring comfort to the grieving, and give rest to the weary. May his peace settle over every home on your street.
