This short morning prayer is for our leaders, the people in government, the church, the workplace and the home who carry decisions that affect others. Pray it early, before the first call, meeting or headline, while the day is still quiet. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own names and concerns in your own words.

Short Morning Prayer for Our Leaders

Lord, this morning I bring before you the leaders I know and the ones I only see in the news. I pray for the president, the governors, the mayors and the members of the councils and courts who will make decisions today. I pray for the pastors who will preach, counsel and visit the sick, and for the principals, managers and team leads who will sit across from people with hard choices. Give them clear minds and steady hearts. Keep their words honest and their motives pure.

Father, let them not carry this weight alone. Surround them with wise counsel and with friends who will tell them the truth. Guard them from pride when things go well and from despair when they do not. Where they are tempted to chase applause or fear criticism more than they fear you, turn their eyes back to your face. Help them to listen before they speak and to care for the people who will feel the results of what they decide. Let justice and mercy meet in their work today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I lift up our leaders this morning. Give wisdom to those who decide, courage to those who serve, and humility to those who lead. Protect them from pride and fear, and let their work bring good to the people who depend on them. Keep their families safe and their consciences clear. Thank you that you hear us. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul asks that prayers be offered for kings and all who are in authority. Read this slowly and let it shape the names you bring to God this morning, including the ones you disagree with.

Proverbs 11:14

Where there is no wise guidance, the nation falls, but in the multitude of counselors there is victory.

(WEB)

Pray that your leaders would seek good counsel and welcome honest advice. Ask God to place wise people near them and to make them willing to listen.

Proverbs 21:1

The king’s heart is in the LORD’s hand like the watercourses. He turns it wherever he desires.

(WEB)

Thank God that no ruler’s heart is beyond his reach. Ask him to direct the hearts of your leaders toward what is right today.

Psalm 72:1-2

1 God, give the king your justice; your righteousness to the royal son. 2 He will judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice.

(WEB)

This psalm prays for a king to rule with righteousness and justice. Use it to ask that your leaders would judge the people under them fairly, especially the poor and the vulnerable.

Romans 13:1

Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God.

(WEB)

Paul reminds believers that authority is ordered within God’s purposes. Pray this verse as a reminder that God remains sovereign over every office, even when the leaders in it are flawed.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time before you open your email, check the news or start your commute. Sit in a chair with your feet on the floor and a cup of coffee or tea in your hands, and let the warmth remind you to slow down. If you have a list of officials, a church bulletin or a work schedule nearby, keep it close and read a few names aloud as you pray.

You can also invite someone else to pray it with you, perhaps a spouse, a roommate or a friend from church. Take turns reading the lines, or let one person pray the main prayer while the other prays the short version. Praying together over the people who lead us reminds both of you that the work of governing and serving belongs to God as much as to them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give wisdom to every leader who serves you and grace to every person who depends on them. May he guard their hearts, steady their hands and keep them faithful today. May he bless you with peace as you go into your own work, knowing that the one who rules over all is good, and that he is near.
