This evening prayer is for the end of a day when discouragement has been heavy: when your efforts feel unseen, your hopes feel thin, and sleep seems far away. Pray it at bedtime, or any quiet moment after dark. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words to God in the same spirit.

Evening Prayer for Overcoming Discouragement

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you what is still weighing on me. I carried disappointments I did not expect, and some of them are still sitting in my chest. I felt tired in the places where I needed strength, and I wondered whether anything I did today really mattered. Please take those thoughts from my hands. You see what I could not finish, what I said that I wish I had not, and what I hoped for that did not happen.

Father, I release the discouragement I have carried since morning. Settle my mind the way a tired child is settled into bed, safe and no longer required to hold everything up. Quiet the voice that says I am failing or that tomorrow will be the same. Remind me that you are steady when I am not, and that you were present in this day even in the parts I did not notice. Let gratitude find me now for the small mercies I can name: a meal, a kind word, a breath that came easily.

Watch over me through the night. Guard my rest, and let me wake with a little more courage than I went to sleep with. Help me trust that you are still at work in my life and in the people I love. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am discouraged tonight and I do not have words for all of it. Take what I am carrying, quiet my worried thoughts, and help me rest in your care. Thank you for this day, even the hard parts. Keep me through the night and let me wake with hope enough for one more step. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

When discouragement feels like it is pressing in from every side, pray this verse slowly and name God as your shelter. Ask him to be the refuge you run to tonight rather than the one you turn to only when you have run out of other options.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Read this verse as an honest confession of what your heart feels like at the end of the day. Thank God that he draws near to the brokenhearted, and ask him to draw near to you right where you are.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion, both physical and emotional, to Jesus in the words of this verse. Ask him to show you what it looks like to set down the burdens you were never meant to carry alone.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the weakness you feel tonight. Ask God to give strength to the weary and to renew what has been drained, trusting that your energy is not the final measure of what he can do.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

This passage was written by someone who had seen real loss, yet still spoke of God’s faithfulness. Pray it as a declaration that tomorrow’s mercies are already on their way, and ask God to help you believe that before morning comes.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last quiet minutes before you sleep, ideally in the same place each night, such as beside your bed or in a chair by a lamp. Holding something in your hands can help, like a smooth stone, a folded blanket, or the edge of your pillow, so your body can join the act of letting go.

If you share a home with someone, you can pray it together, or ask a friend or family member to pray it over you by phone. Speaking the prayer aloud to another person can make the discouragement feel less isolating and give you someone to pray for in return.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep watch over you tonight. May he lighten what you have carried, steady your heart for rest, and remind you that your worth is not measured by how the day went. May you wake to find that his mercies are new, and that you are held by a love that does not run out.
