This bedtime prayer is for anyone who lies down at night with a racing mind, a knot in the stomach, or a worry that keeps returning when the lights go out. Pray it in the last minutes of the day, once the house is quiet, and read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Overcoming Fear

Father, the day is ending and I am bringing You what I carried through it. I told myself I was fine, but fear has been sitting with me: the phone call I dread, the bills I keep adding up, the health worry I haven’t said out loud, and the quiet question of whether I am enough for the people who depend on me. Tonight I set those down in Your presence and admit I cannot hold them up by myself.

Be my shelter in the dark. Guard my mind as my head meets the pillow, and quiet the thoughts that replay the worst outcomes. When I wake in the night with my heart pounding, remind me that You have not stepped away from my bedroom or my future. Give me the steadiness to tell what is real from what my anxious heart has invented, and let me rest in what I know of Your faithfulness.

Thank You for the small mercies of this day: the warm meal, the work that got finished, the friend who listened, the breath I still get to take. Let sleep come as a gift and not a battle. I trust You with tomorrow, and I trust You with tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am afraid, and I am tired of pretending otherwise. Hold me as I lie here. Calm what is racing, turn my worry into trust, and keep me safe until morning. Remind me that I am not alone in this room or in this night. Thank You for being near. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse was written by someone who knew how to rest in God even while surrounded by danger. Pray it slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase settle your breathing and remind you that sleep itself can be an act of trust.

Psalm 91:4-5

4 He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart. 5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day…

(WEB)

The image of God as a covering and a shield speaks directly to night fears. Pray these lines over the specific things that frighten you, naming them one by one and asking for protection from each.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God’s promise to be present is repeated with strength and tenderness. Read it aloud, and when you reach the words about His help, pause and thank Him for the help you already have received.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don’t let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks of a peace that does not depend on circumstances. Pray for that kind of peace, the kind that can exist even while the problem remains unsolved, and ask Him to give it to you tonight.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and promises a peace that guards the heart and mind. Use this verse to hand each worry to God in turn, then wait quietly for the calm that follows.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time about fifteen minutes before you intend to sleep, when screens are off and the lamp is low. Sit on the edge of the bed or lie down with a hand resting on your chest, and let your breathing slow before you begin. If a fear comes up mid-prayer, pause and speak its name to God.

If you share a home, consider praying this together with a spouse, a child, or a roommate who struggles with nighttime worry. You can take turns reading lines aloud, which often makes the words easier to receive. Keep a notebook nearby, so that anything still nagging you can be written down and handed over before you turn out the light.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you give you rest tonight. May the fears that crowd your mind grow quiet in His presence, and may you wake to a morning that holds more grace than you expected. Sleep well, knowing you are held.
