This is a bedtime prayer for peace of mind, written for the end of the day when the mind keeps running after the body is ready to rest. Pray it in the last few minutes before you turn out the light, either reading it aloud as written or using it as a starting point and putting your own worries into your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Peace of Mind

Lord, the day is closing and I am still carrying it. The unfinished emails are in my head, the conversation I replayed on the drive home, the bills I keep meaning to look at, and the quiet worry about the health of someone I love. I do not want to take all of that into my sleep. So I set it down here, in your presence, and I ask you to take what I cannot fix tonight.

Settle my thoughts the way you settle a restless lake. Slow the racing lists and the what-ifs until they stop shouting. Where I have sinned today, forgive me, and where I have been hurt, heal what you can reach. Guard the house I sleep in and the people under this roof. Keep the night dark and quiet for them, and let me wake to a morning that is not full of dread. Thank you for the small good things from today, the warm meal, the kind word, the sun on the sidewalk. Let me rest in the simple fact that you are awake while I sleep. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my mind is loud tonight and I cannot quiet it alone. I give you the worry about tomorrow and the ache from today. Hold my thoughts the way you hold the stars in their places. Let me sleep without fear, and let me wake knowing you were near all night. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul names the exact pattern of anxious nights: worry, then prayer, then thanksgiving. Read this slowly and turn each worry into a request you name aloud, so the peace it promises has something concrete to guard.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This short line is made for bedtime. Pray it as a statement of trust, letting your body lie down as you say that you will sleep because God is the one keeping watch.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

The peace here comes from a mind fixed on God rather than on the problem. When your thoughts drift back to the day, gently return them to him and say his name as you do.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that the work of the world does not depend on your staying awake to control it. Pray it as permission to stop striving and to trust God with what remains undone.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to the weary and burdened, which describes many people at the end of a long day. Pray this verse by naming the specific weight you are carrying and offering it to him in exchange for his rest.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a set time each night, after the lights are dimmed and the phone is charging somewhere out of reach. Sit on the edge of the bed or stay in a comfortable chair, and keep one hand open on your lap or resting on the blanket. Some people find it helpful to write their worries on a scrap of paper first and then read the prayer over the list.

If you share a home, invite someone to pray this with you, or let a spouse, parent or friend read it aloud while you listen with your eyes closed. Praying for another person’s peace of mind can loosen your own grip on your worries too. Keep the prayer short enough that you can finish it even when you are tired.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who never sleeps keep watch over your mind tonight. May the worries you have named be lifted from your shoulders and placed in his hands. May you lie down in quiet and wake in the morning with a steady heart, held by a peace that holds even when the day has not gone as planned.
