This is a daily prayer for serving others, written for the moments when you are about to help a family member, a coworker, a neighbor, or a stranger and feel your patience running thin. Pray it in the morning before the day’s demands begin, or in the car before you walk through the door where people will need you. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Daily Prayer for Serving Others

Lord, you served us first, and you never once grew tired of the people who came to you with their needs. Teach me to do the same today. Give me eyes to notice the person who is quietly struggling, the child who needs one more reminder to brush their teeth, the coworker who has been carrying too much alone. Keep my hands ready to help and my heart open to the people in front of me, not only the people I would prefer to help.

I confess that I often serve with a hidden tally in my head. I want thanks, I want the work to be noticed, and I get irritated when no one acknowledges what I have given. Free me from that. Let my service come from gratitude for what you have done for me, not from a need to be seen. When I am interrupted, when a task takes longer than I planned, or when the person I am helping is ungrateful or hard to please, steady my spirit and remind me whose approval matters most.

Give me wisdom about when to step in and when to step back, and courage to speak the truth in love when someone needs more than a quick fix. Strengthen my body for the physical tasks and my mind for the decisions that weigh on others. Watch over the people I will serve today, and let them meet you through my ordinary kindnesses. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, help me serve well in this next moment. Slow my impatience, open my eyes to the person near me, and let my words and hands carry your kindness rather than my own frustration. Remind me that you see what I give, even when no one else does. Let me love the one in front of me as you have loved me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 5:13

For you, brothers, were called for freedom. Only don’t use your freedom for gain to the flesh, but through love be servants to one another.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel pulled toward serving only when it suits you. Ask God to show you how freedom in Christ becomes a freedom to give, rather than an excuse to keep your time and energy to yourself.

Mark 10:45

For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

(WEB)

Use this verse to shape your heart before a day of helping others. Ask Jesus to form in you the same posture he showed, one that gives freely without demanding to be waited upon in return.

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

(WEB)

Pray this when your own agenda is crowding out other people’s needs. Ask God to loosen your grip on your plans so you can notice the interests and burdens of those around you.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

This verse is a good companion for ordinary, unseen work like cooking, cleaning, or covering a shift. Pray that you would do each task as service to the Lord, even when the people you help never say thank you.

Matthew 25:40

“The King will answer them, ‘Most certainly I tell you, because you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

(WEB)

Pray this verse when a small act of help feels insignificant. Ask Jesus to let you see him in the people you serve, and to make your kindness a way of honoring him in the everyday.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this in the first few minutes of the day, sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee before anyone else is awake. If you have young children, a spouse, or aging parents, you might pray it while your hands are busy with something simple, like filling a lunchbox, folding laundry, or washing dishes. Let the physical task remind you that serving is often made of small, repeated acts done for love.

You can also pray this together with someone you live or work with. A spouse, a friend, or a small group can take turns reading one paragraph each, then pause to name one person they plan to serve that day. Praying it aloud with others can make the commitment feel shared, and it gives you someone to ask later whether the day went the way you hoped.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who served his people fill your hands with strength and your heart with patience today. May he show you exactly where your help is needed, and give you grace when the work is hard and the thanks is slow to come. May you be a quiet source of peace to everyone you meet, and may you rest tonight knowing that your small faithfulness has been seen.
