This short prayer is for anyone living, working, studying or serving away from the people and places that feel like home. You can pray it when homesickness settles in at night, on a long drive back from a visit, or first thing in the morning before the day’s unfamiliar routines begin. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs to say more.

Short Prayer for Those Away From Home

Lord, you know exactly where I am tonight, and you know the distance I feel from the people I love. The house sounds different here, the streets are unfamiliar, and the small things that used to ground me are not close at hand. I miss the voices, the meals, the familiar corners of my everyday life. Be near to me in this quiet place. Let your presence be more real to me than the miles between me and the ones I long to see.

Father, I ask you to watch over the people I left behind. Keep my family and friends safe on their roads, healthy in their bodies, and steady in their hearts while I am gone. Let them know I am thinking of them, and let me hear from them when it matters most. Where there is worry on either side of the distance, replace it with your peace, and where there is loneliness, remind us both that we belong to you and to one another.

Give me courage for the days ahead, and wisdom for the choices I have to make in a place where I am still finding my footing. Help me to be open to new friendships, to notice kindness from strangers, and to let this new place become a place where I can also grow roots. When I feel like an outsider, remind me that you have already made a home for me in your love. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am far from home and feeling the ache of it right now. Be with me in this moment, steady my heart, and hold the people I miss in your care. Help me take the next step, even if it is small. Thank you that I am never out of your sight or beyond your reach. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

When you feel stretched across an ocean or a mountain range, pray these words to remember that God’s hand reaches to the farthest place you have traveled. Let the picture of his leading and holding become the foundation of your prayer.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear about an unfamiliar place or an uncertain future rises in you. Pray it slowly, asking God to make you strong and unafraid because he is the one who goes with you.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this for the people you left behind as well as for yourself. Ask the Lord to guard their coming and going, and trust that his watchful care reaches into every road and every day.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

When loneliness feels heavy, let this verse speak directly to you. Repeat God’s promise of presence and strength, and tell him honestly where you feel weakest in this new season.

Ruth 1:16

Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you, and to return from following you, for where you go, I will go; and where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.

(WEB)

Ruth chose to leave her homeland and bind herself to a new people. Pray this verse as a way of asking God to help you put down roots in a new place while honoring the bonds you carry with you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time to pray it, such as the evening after a long day or the quiet moment before you leave for work or class. Sitting near a window or at a table where you can see the sky can help the words feel connected to the wider world you are part of. Some people keep a photo of loved ones in view while they pray, letting the picture remind them who they are lifting up.

Consider inviting someone else to pray it with you, whether a friend in your new town or a family member on a video call across the distance. Praying together can ease the isolation and reminds you that you are part of a larger body of believers, even when you cannot be in the same room. Take a few moments afterward to write down anything you want to bring back to God later.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you in every unfamiliar street and new beginning. May he keep those you love in his safe hand while you are apart, and may you feel his nearness in the quiet places. May the peace of God guard your heart and your home, wherever home may be.
