This short morning prayer is for anyone beginning again: after a job loss, a divorce, a move, a relapse, a hard season that has ended, or simply a fresh start you did not expect to need. Pray it first thing, while the house is still quiet or before your feet hit the floor, and read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.

Short Morning Prayer for Those Starting Over

Lord, I wake up today and I do not feel ready. Yesterday I was carrying things I did not know how to set down, and this morning I am carrying them still. Thank you that you are the same God who was with me then, and that you have not been surprised by any part of my story. Help me not to measure this day against the life I used to have.

Give me clear thinking for the first decisions I face: the phone call I need to make, the bills I need to look at, the conversation I have been dreading. Where I am tired, give me strength that is more than my own. Where I am ashamed of where I started over, remind me that you do not count my beginnings the way I do. Let me take one honest step before I take ten.

Go ahead of me into the people I will meet today, the ones who know my history and the ones who do not. Keep my heart soft toward them and my mouth careful. When I stumble, let me get up without hiding. Make this morning a place to begin, and let the rest of the day unfold one hour at a time under your hand. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am starting over and I am tired before the day has begun. Give me enough for this hour, not the whole week. Steady my thoughts, guard my tongue, and show me the one thing that matters most right now. Remind me that you are already here, and that I am not beginning alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel that yesterday used up all your mercy. It reminds you that each morning is a fresh supply of God’s kindness, not a second chance you have to earn.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

When starting over feels like wandering in a dry place, pray this verse slowly and ask God to show you the new path he is already making, even if you cannot see it from where you stand.

Psalm 143:8

Cause me to hear your loving kindness in the morning, for I trust in you. Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, for I lift up my soul to you.

(WEB)

Use this verse as a plain request for direction. Ask God to let you hear his guidance in the morning, before the noise of the day fills your head.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are tempted to keep replaying what you lost. Ask God to help you leave the past where it belongs and press on toward what he has for you today.

Psalm 40:2

He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of being lifted from a pit and set on firm ground. Pray it as a reminder that God has moved you before, and that he can steady your feet again this morning.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try to pray this before you check your phone or look at the news. Sit on the edge of the bed or at the kitchen table with a cup of something warm in your hands, and let the first minutes of the day belong to God. If your mind wanders, return to one line and stay there.

If you are not alone, ask a friend, a spouse, or a small group to pray it with you, or to pray it over you by text on the mornings when you cannot find the words. Writing the prayer on a card and keeping it by your keys or your coffee maker can help you come back to it when your day gets loud.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who meets you each morning go before you into this day. May he give you the courage to take the next honest step, the patience to rest when you need to, and the peace that does not depend on how the day turns out. Let his faithfulness be the first thing you notice when you wake and the last thing you hold when you sleep.
