This evening prayer is for anyone who has spent the day working, whether in an office, a warehouse, a classroom, a hospital, a kitchen, a truck cab, or at home with a laptop and a list that never ended. It is meant to be prayed in the evening, once the work is done or as you wind down before bed. Read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your day asks for them.

Evening Prayer for Those Working Today

Lord, thank you for this day and for the work you gave me to do in it. Thank you for the strength to show up, for the tasks I finished, and for the people I was able to help or simply get through the hours beside. Some of it went well, and some of it did not. I bring you the emails I didn’t answer, the conversation that went sideways, the deadline I’m still carrying, and the tiredness sitting in my shoulders now. Take them from my hands tonight.

Forgive me for the moments I worried more than I trusted, for the impatience I showed, and for the times I measured my worth by what I produced. Help me rest in knowing that you see my work and that you do not need me to hold everything together. Watch over my body while I sleep, guard my mind from replaying the day’s pressures, and steady my heart for whatever tomorrow brings. Be with the people I work beside and the ones who depend on me, and keep them safe tonight. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I’m done for today, and I hand you what’s left of it. Thank you for the work you gave me and the strength to do it. Take my worries about tomorrow, quiet the list running in my head, and let me sleep without guilt over what I didn’t finish. Watch over me and the people I love until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, naming the specific worries you are setting aside so that you can rest. It reminds you that sleep is a gift God gives, not a reward you earn by finishing everything.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as the day’s work winds down. Let it loosen your grip on the idea that everything depends on your effort, and receive the rest God offers as trust rather than laziness.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring your exhaustion, both physical and emotional, into this invitation. Pray it slowly, pausing on the word “rest,” and tell Jesus honestly what has been heavy on you today.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When today felt like it used you up, pray this passage to remember that God’s mercy is renewed each morning. Thank him that tomorrow begins with fresh compassion, not with the weight of today’s mistakes.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this verse to turn your work anxieties into specific prayers. Name each concern as you pray, and ask for the peace that guards the heart and mind to settle over you tonight.

How to Pray This Prayer

Find a quiet spot at the end of your workday, even if it is only for three minutes in the car before you walk inside or on the edge of your bed before you turn off the light. Sit or lie down, let your hands open or rest in your lap, and breathe slowly for a moment before you begin. Some people find it helps to pray the prayer while washing the dishes, folding laundry, or walking the dog, so the words can follow the rhythm of an ordinary evening.

If you live with someone who also works hard, you might pray this together at the dinner table or before lights out, taking turns reading a line each. You can also send the prayer to a coworker or friend who is still carrying a heavy day, letting them know you are praying for them tonight. Keep it short on nights when you are too tired for more, and let the simple words do their work.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over your going out and coming in keep watch over you tonight. May your work be set down, your worries be held by someone stronger than you, and your sleep be deep and untroubled. May you wake to a new morning with mercy waiting for you.
