This daily prayer for protection is written for the start of your day, when the to-do list is long and the unknowns feel loud. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own concerns into your own words. It takes about two minutes, and it can be prayed at the kitchen table, in the car, or on the way out the door.

Daily Prayer for Protection

Lord, I come to you before the day begins. You know the places where I will go and the people I will meet, and you know the things I cannot see coming. Be my shelter today. Guard my body on the road, at work, and in every room I walk into. Keep my home safe while I am away and watch over the people I love, including the ones who are far from me and the ones I worry about most.

Protect my mind as well as my body. Guard me from the fear that rises when the news is bad or the phone rings too early. Where I am tempted toward anger, pride, or despair, steady my heart. Let my words be careful and my choices be wise. When I face temptation, give me a way out and the courage to take it. Help me to remember that I do not have to carry the weight of tomorrow alone.

Thank you that you are a faithful guardian, and that your care does not depend on how well I feel or how much I understand. I place this day in your hands, trusting you with what I can control and what I cannot. Go before me, stand beside me, and bring me home at night. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am asking for your protection on this day. Guard my steps, my family, and my heart. Keep me from harm I cannot see and from fear I cannot shake. Be near me in the hard moments and give me your peace. Thank you that you never leave me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 91:1-2

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God, in whom I trust.”

(WEB)

Begin here by naming God as the place you run to. Pray that you would live in his shelter today, not just visit it when trouble comes, and that you would speak of him as your refuge and your fortress.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Use this verse as a promise for your going out and your coming in. Ask the Lord to keep you from harm on every errand, drive, and conversation, and to watch over you from now until you return.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

When fear is pressing in, pray this verse slowly. Ask God to remind you that he is with you, and let his strength meet the specific worry you bring to him this morning.

Proverbs 18:10

The LORD’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a reminder that the Lord’s name is a safe place. Ask him to draw you toward himself when you feel exposed, and to make you someone who runs to him first rather than last.

2 Thessalonians 3:3

But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you, and guard you from the evil one.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your own steadiness and for the protection of others. Ask the Lord to be faithful to guard you from the evil one, and to strengthen you for whatever the day holds.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this prayer first thing in the morning, before checking messages or the news. Choose a quiet spot, such as the edge of the bed, a chair by a window, or the driver’s seat before you start the engine. Holding a cup of coffee or resting a hand on your Bible can keep your attention from wandering.

You can also pray this prayer with someone else. A spouse, a roommate, or a friend can take turns reading a paragraph, or you can pray it aloud for a child before school. Praying for others in this way reminds you that protection is something God extends through community as well as through his own care.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord guard you going out and coming in, from this morning until the evening. May he be a shelter over your home and a steady presence in every room you enter. May you walk through this day with peace in your heart and courage in your steps, knowing you are held.
