Prayers for the year ahead are written for the start of a new year, a birthday, a new season of school or work, or any moment when you feel the calendar stretching out before you with more questions than answers. You can pray the prayer below word for word, or use it as a starting point and speak your own version in your own voice. Pray it on the first morning of the year, at a turning point, or whenever the future feels heavy.

Prayers for the Year Ahead

Lord, I come to You at the beginning of this year knowing I cannot see what lies ahead. Some days I feel eager and hopeful, and other days I feel tired before I have even started. Keep my heart steady when the unknowns press in, and help me remember that You have already been present in every month still to come. Give me wisdom for the decisions I will face about work, money, health, and the people I love, and let me not rush ahead of You or stall out of fear.

Father, I bring You the people I worry about most this year: my family, my friends, and those who are struggling in ways I may never see. Guard their health and their hearts. Where there is conflict, bring honesty and gentleness. Where there is grief waiting to arrive, meet them with comfort before the pain comes. Teach me to pray for others faithfully, and to act on that prayer when You open the door. Shape my character as the months go by, so that patience, kindness, and courage grow in me more than worry does. Be near me on the ordinary days, not only the big ones. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, this year is new and I do not know what it will hold. I trust You with the hours ahead, one at a time. Give me enough wisdom for today, enough strength for this week, and enough peace to rest in You when plans change. Keep my eyes on You more than on what might go wrong. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time on the first morning of the year, or on the day you feel the new season beginning. Sit at a table with a cup of something warm and read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let your heart catch up with your words. If you want to make it physical, write the names of the people you are praying for on a card and place it somewhere you will see often, such as by your bathroom mirror or on your refrigerator.

You might also pray this with someone you trust, such as a spouse, a close friend, or a small group at church. Let them read it aloud while you listen, then trade places. Praying the year ahead with another person reminds you that you do not have to carry its uncertainties alone, and it gives you someone to check in with as the months unfold.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every month of this year, and may He walk beside you when the road is steep. May He keep your heart at rest and your steps steady. May the people you love be held in His care, and may you know His faithfulness each morning as you begin again.
