This prayer is for the moment you face a choice that feels too big, too early, or too tangled to see through. Pray it when you are weighing a job offer, a move, a relationship, a purchase, or a decision you have been turning over at night. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own details in the spaces.

Prayers for My Decisions

Lord, you see the whole picture, and I only see the next step. I come to you with a decision in front of me, and I admit that I am tired of going around the same questions in my head. Some of my thoughts are about what other people will think. Some are about money, time, and whether I can really afford to be wrong. Some are simply fear that I will choose badly and carry the cost for years. Please quiet the noise long enough for me to hear what is true.

Give me clear thinking and an honest heart. Show me what I want because it is good, and what I want only because it feels safe or impressive. Remove the pressure I have put on myself to get this exactly right, and help me hold the outcome loosely in your hands. If one path is closed, close it firmly. If another door is open, help me walk through it without dragging my doubts behind me. Let me be willing to take a step even when I cannot see the end of it.

I trust that you are not surprised by this choice and that you are not waiting to catch me in a mistake. Guide my steps, correct my course where I drift, and speak peace into the places where I am anxious. Whatever I decide, let me do it with humility, integrity, and love for the people my choice will touch. Thank you for being near when I do not know what to do. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I have to decide, and I do not feel ready. Give me wisdom for this choice, clear sight about what matters, and freedom from the fear of getting it wrong. Steady my heart and show me the next right step. I trust you with the outcome. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific decision in front of you and asking God, by name, for the wisdom you lack. It reminds you that asking is not a sign of weakness but the way wisdom is received.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and pray it as a release of your own cleverness. Ask God to show you where you have been leaning too hard on your own understanding and to make your paths straight.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Turn this promise into a request: ask God to instruct you in the way you should go and to keep his eye on you as you move forward. Let it steady you when you feel lost in the options.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

Use this psalm as a humble prayer for direction. Ask God to make his ways known to you and to teach you his truth, especially in the choice you are now facing.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring the anxiety that comes with decisions into prayer as you read this passage. Ask God to guard your heart and mind with his peace while you keep working through the choice.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as early in the morning before the day fills up or in the evening after the house is still. Sit somewhere you can be undistracted, and if you are able, write the decision at the top of a sheet of paper. Read the prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph to let your own honest thoughts rise up and be given to God.

It can help to pray with your hands busy, since many people think more clearly when they are doing something simple. Hold a cup of tea, walk a familiar route, or fold laundry while you pray. If you have a trusted friend, mentor, or spouse, ask them to pray the prayer for you, or to pray over your decision with you, so that you are not carrying the weight alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who knows the end from the beginning give you a clear mind and a settled heart. May he walk ahead of you on the path, and may his peace guard you whatever you choose. Let this be a day when you rest in his faithfulness and move forward with courage.
