This evening prayer is for anyone who goes to bed carrying a hurt, a fear, or a heaviness that the day did not resolve. It is meant to be prayed at the end of the day, as the lights go down, and it can be read aloud exactly as written or used as a starting point for your own words. Pray it whenever the emotions of the day are still close to the surface.

Evening Prayer for Emotional Healing

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring you what I am still holding. There were words said that stung, and moments when I felt small or forgotten. Some of the ache is old, and some of it is new, and I am tired of carrying all of it by myself. I give you the memory that keeps replaying, the tightness in my chest, and the sadness I did not have time to name.

Heal what has been bruised inside me. Settle the racing thoughts and quiet the voice that tells me I should have done better. Where I have believed lies about my worth or my future, speak your truth until it sinks deeper than the lies. Restore the parts of me that feel raw, and help me trust that you see exactly what I feel, without flinching and without turning away.

Keep me safe through this night. Guard my sleep, and let my body rest even if my heart is not yet still. If I wake in the dark with fear, remind me that you are near. Thank you for the good moments of this day, for the people who showed care, and for your steady presence when I did not feel it. I release what I cannot fix into your hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and my heart feels heavy tonight. Take the hurt I cannot carry anymore and hold it for me. Calm the noise in my mind, heal what is tender, and remind me that I am loved even when I feel unseen. Give me rest, and let me wake tomorrow a little lighter. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you pray, and name the specific heartbreak you are bringing to God. The verse reminds you that nearness to the hurting is part of who God is, so you can speak plainly about what has wounded you.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Let the invitation of this verse shape your prayer. Tell Jesus what you are tired of carrying, then pause and simply accept his offer of rest before you move on to the next line.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask God directly for healing of the inner wounds you have been hiding. Pray for the bruised places by name, trusting that God is the one who binds them up.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your thoughts are spinning. Ask God to keep your mind fixed on him tonight, and let each quiet breath become a small act of trust in his faithfulness.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Close your evening with this verse as a prayer of release. Ask God to grant you sleep and safety, and thank him that you can lie down without having to hold everything together on your own.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at the end of the day, after the screens are off and before you turn out the light. Sitting on the edge of your bed or in a chair near a lamp works well, and you might rest one hand on your chest or over your heart as you pray. A small gesture like that can help the words settle from your head into your body.

If someone you trust lives with you or is close by, invite them to pray it with you or over you, reading the lines aloud in turn. If you are alone, consider writing the names of the people or situations you are releasing on a slip of paper and placing it somewhere out of sight until morning. Pray it as often as you need, and do not worry about getting the words exactly right.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over the night wrap you in a peace that does not depend on how the day went. May your wounds find gentle care, and your heart be given room to breathe. As you sleep, may you wake to a morning where love meets you again, and may you know that you are held.
