This short morning prayer is for the moment you wake up thinking about a friend who is sick. You can pray it at the edge of the bed, over the first cup of coffee, or on the drive to work before the day pulls you in. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Short Morning Prayer for a Sick Friend

Lord, I wake up this morning with my friend on my mind. You know exactly how she is doing today: how she slept, what her body is asking for, and what the doctors are weighing in their heads. Thank you that nothing about her condition is hidden from you, and that you are already awake and at work before I am. Give her a night that was more restful than the last one, and let the first hours of her day feel a little lighter than she expects.

Be near to her during the tests, the medicines, and the long stretches of waiting. Steady her when the fear rises, and give her enough strength to get through the small tasks, like sitting up, eating a little, or answering a text from someone who loves her. Remind her family that they do not have to carry every decision alone. Give the nurses and doctors wisdom, patience, and clear minds, and let the right information reach the right people at the right time.

As I go into my own day, keep me from treating her illness as a distant news item. Help me remember her when I am sitting in traffic, at my desk, or standing in the kitchen. Make me a faithful friend, someone who calls, sends a message, or brings soup without needing to be asked. Let my hands and words be useful to her today, and let her feel that she is not forgotten. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, my friend is sick this morning, and you already know every detail of it. Hold her in your hands and give her rest, comfort, and the strength she needs for today. Be with the people caring for her, and help me be a good friend to her in whatever ways I can manage. Let her know she is loved, and let this day bring her a little more peace than she had yesterday. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your friend as a reminder that God does not leave the sick person alone on their bed. Ask him to be the one who sustains her strength today, and let the words remind you that he is present even when she cannot feel it.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly, then pray it over your friend’s fear and fatigue. Ask God to strengthen her and hold her steady, especially in the hours when she feels least able to face the day ahead.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring this promise of rest into your prayer for your friend. Ask Jesus to give her real rest, not only sleep, but a settled sense that she does not have to carry her illness by herself.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your friend feels weak or discouraged by her limits. Ask God to show his strength in the places where she has none left, and to remind her that his grace is enough for the morning.

James 5:14-15

14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the assembly, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, 15 and the prayer of faith will heal him who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for your friend and for the people gathered around her. Ask God to bring healing where it is his will and to give her the company of faithful people who are willing to pray and stand with her.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer at a time that is already yours, such as while the coffee brews, before you open your phone, or during your walk to the car. Keep a small object nearby, like a pen, a prayer card, or a candle, so your hands have something to hold while your mind gets quiet. If you can, write your friend’s name on a sticky note and place it where you will see it during the day, so the prayer continues after you stand up.

Consider inviting another person to pray with you, such as a spouse, a roommate, or a small group from church. You might also text your friend a single line from the prayer, or ask her family what would be most helpful to hear today. Praying together, even by phone, reminds everyone involved that the sick person is not carrying this alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees your friend this morning give her rest in her body and peace in her heart. May he surround her with people who love her and hands that know how to help. And may he give you a steady hand and a faithful heart as you walk into the day together.
