This short prayer is for the moment when you are starting over, whether you have left a job, a marriage, a city, a habit, or a season of failure and need to begin again with God. Pray it when you wake up on the first morning of something new, when the old life still feels close, or when you cannot find the words yourself. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayer When You Are Starting Over

Lord, you see where I have been and you know where I am standing right now. I am tired of looking backward, and some days I am not sure I have the strength to try again. I bring you the mistakes I keep replaying, the fear that I have used up my chances, and the quiet voice that says it is too late for me. Please meet me in the middle of this uncertainty and remind me that you are not surprised by my situation.

Give me clear enough sight to take the next small step and not demand that I see the whole road. Help me hold my plans loosely, so that I can receive what you are shaping in me as well as what I am trying to build. Where I need to forgive myself, teach me how, and where I need to forgive someone else, give me the willingness to begin. Let this new start be rooted in your steady love rather than in my own pressure to prove something.

Thank you that my beginning does not depend on how well I performed before. Thank you that you make new things and that you are present in the ordinary work of today. I place this fresh start in your hands, trusting you with the outcome. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am starting over and I feel unsure of myself. Forgive what is behind me, steady what is in front of me, and walk with me through this next hour. Help me take one honest step and trust you with the rest. Make something new in me today. Amen.

(WEB)

Pray this when you are tempted to keep rehearsing old losses. Ask God to open your eyes to the new thing he is already doing, even if you cannot yet see its shape.

Philippians 3:13-14

13 Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when looking back keeps pulling you off course. Ask God to help you press forward toward the goal he has set before you, one day at a time.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as first thing in the morning before your phone or your worries get hold of you, or the moment you sit down at your desk on the first day of something new. Find a quiet corner of your home, or sit in the car before you go in. Keep a notebook nearby so you can write down any name, fear, or hope that comes up while you pray, and return to those lines later in the week.

Let your hands do something while you speak. Hold a cup of coffee, open a window, or place a hand on the table as a physical reminder that you are setting something down and receiving something new. Consider asking a trusted friend, mentor, or pastor to pray this prayer with you or for you, especially on the days when your own words feel thin.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who makes all things new go before you into this season. May he steady your steps, quiet your fears, and show you the next small faithful thing to do. May you rest in his mercy each morning and find that his grace is enough for the road ahead.
