A bedtime prayer for a church service is a short prayer you pray in the evening as you look ahead to worship the next day. It helps you release the week’s worries, ask God to prepare your heart for church, and rest in his care through the night. You can read the prayer below aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words into it.
Bedtime Prayer for a Church Service
Father, the day is ending and I am ready to rest. Thank you for the hours you gave me, for the work I finished and the work I left undone, and for every small mercy I noticed and every one I missed. I bring you the things still on my mind: the conversation that went badly, the bills on the kitchen table, the friend I haven’t called back. I set them down here, because I cannot carry them into the night and into tomorrow’s worship too.
Tomorrow I will walk into church with my family, and some of us will arrive tired, distracted, or carrying something heavy. Prepare my heart before I get there. Let me come to worship expecting to meet you, not just going through the motions. Quiet my mind when the music starts and soften my heart when the sermon speaks to me. Help me sing with honesty and listen with humility, and open my eyes to the people sitting beside me who need encouragement. Keep the pastors, the greeters, the children’s teachers, and the musicians in your hands.
Watch over me while I sleep. Guard my rest and give me peace that does not depend on how the day went. Thank you that you do not slumber or sleep, and that I can close my eyes because you are awake. Lord, I trust you with tomorrow. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I am tired and my thoughts are running ahead to tomorrow. Quiet my mind and let me rest in you tonight. Prepare my heart for church in the morning so I can come to worship with an open heart and a listening spirit. Keep my family safe while we sleep, and thank you that I am held by your love from the moment I lie down until I wake. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer after you have turned off the lights and settled into bed, or in the quiet minutes before you sleep. If you have a few minutes earlier in the evening, you might also set out your clothes and Bible for church and pray over them as you do. Keep a hand on your pillow or lay it on your chest as you pray, a small reminder that you are resting in God’s hands.
Parents can pray this prayer with children at bedtime, changing “I” to “we” and naming each child in turn. A spouse or close friend can also pray it aloud for you, which often brings comfort when the day has been hard. Whoever prays it, let the prayer end in silence for a moment before you say goodnight, so that the words have room to settle.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over his people keep you tonight and bring you to worship with a rested and ready heart. May his peace guard your sleep, and may his faithfulness meet you when you wake. Go to bed in his care.
