This page gives you ready-to-use Bible study questions for Colossians 2, with a leader’s answer or discussion note for each one. It suits a small group, a Sunday class, or personal study. You can work through the questions in order or pick the sets that fit your time. Each section moves from what the text says, to what it means, to how it shapes daily life.
Colossians 2 at a Glance
Paul opens the chapter by describing his concern for the believers in Colossae and Laodicea, whom he has never met in person. He wants their hearts encouraged and their understanding grounded in Christ, who holds all wisdom and knowledge. He then warns them against clever arguments and human traditions that pull attention away from Christ.
The middle of the chapter gives the heart of the letter: in Christ, believers are made full, united with him in a spiritual circumcision, buried and raised with him in baptism, and forgiven. The final section applies this to daily life, rejecting rules about food, festivals and self-made spirituality, and calling the group back to holding firmly to Christ, the Head.
Observation Questions
Start here so the group agrees on what the text actually says before anyone offers an interpretation. Read the passage aloud once, then ask one question at a time and let people point to the words on the page before answering.
Colossians 2:2-3
2 That their hearts may be comforted, they being knit together in love, and gaining all riches of the full assurance of understanding, that they may know the mystery of God, both of the Father and of Christ, 3 in whom are all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden.
(WEB)
These verses name Christ as the place where the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden. Reading them early sets the foundation for the rest of the chapter and reminds the group where true understanding comes from.
Colossians 2:6-7
6 As therefore you received Christ Jesus, the Lord, walk in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, even as you were taught, abounding in it in thanksgiving.
(WEB)
Paul’s call to walk in Christ, rooted and built up, is the practical center of the chapter. Read it before the application questions so the group hears the instruction clearly before discussing how to live it.
Colossians 2:9-10
9 For in him all the fullness of the Deity dwells bodily, 10 and in him you are made full, who is the head of all principality and power…
(WEB)
This short passage makes the strongest claim about Christ’s fullness and our completeness in him. It works well as a turning point, moving the group from warnings toward the good news at the heart of the letter.
Colossians 2:13-15
13 You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us; and he has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross; 15 having stripped the principalities and the powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Forgiveness, the canceling of debt and the defeat of opposing powers appear together here. Reading this aloud lets the group feel the weight of what Christ has done before talking about guilt or fear in the application questions.
Colossians 2:19
And not holding firmly to the Head, from whom all the body, being supplied and knit together through the joints and ligaments, grows with God’s growth.
(WEB)
This single verse captures the image of the body growing from its connection to the Head. It is a useful closing read before prayer, reminding the group that growth comes through staying connected to Christ.
Memory Verse for Colossians 2
Colossians 2:6
As therefore you received Christ Jesus, the Lord, walk in him…
(WEB)
This verse is short enough to memorize and sums up the chapter’s call. Encourage the group to repeat it together during the week, and to notice moments when they are invited to walk in Christ in everyday decisions.
A Closing Prayer for the Group
Father, we come to you grateful that all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found in your Son. Thank you that in him we are made full, forgiven and raised to new life with him. Help us to walk in Christ as we were taught, rooted and built up in him, and to hold firmly to the Head rather than to the voices that would rob us of our peace. Keep us from judging one another over shadows, and teach us to live in the substance that belongs to Christ. Give each person here the courage to take one honest step this week, and let our thanksgiving grow with our understanding. Amen.
