This prayer is for families who want to bring their shared life, from the daily routines to the hard seasons, before God. It can be prayed at the dinner table, during a family devotion, at bedtime, or in the car on the way to school. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own family’s names and needs in your own words.

Prayer for Our Family

Lord, thank You for giving us to one another. You know each person in this house by name, and You know the things that keep us up at night and the small joys we tend to overlook. We ask that You would be the center of our home. Guard our going out and our coming in, and give us patience for the moments when we get on each other’s nerves, which happens more often than we like to admit.

Be near to the ones who are struggling right now. Give strength to those who feel tired or discouraged, and wisdom to those who are facing decisions about work, school, health, or money. Where there is tension between us, soften our hearts and help us speak with kindness. Where there is grief, comfort us with Your presence, and remind us that we do not carry it alone. Teach us to forgive quickly and to ask forgiveness without making excuses.

Fill our home with honesty, gentleness, and faith that grows over time. Help us to notice one another’s needs and to serve without keeping score. Protect our children and our parents, our marriage, our friendships, and the people we love who live far away. Let our family be a place where others feel welcomed. We trust You with all of it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, we are your family, and we need you today. Keep us close to each other and close to you. Calm what is anxious, heal what is hurt, and help us love one another the way you love us. Give us grace for the next hour and for the days ahead. Hold each of us in your hands. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by admitting that your household cannot stand on your effort alone. Ask the Lord to build the home you are trying to maintain, and to take the weight of its worries off your shoulders.

Joshua 24:15

If it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose today whom you will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

(WEB)

Read this as a family commitment. Pray that each person in your home would choose to follow God for themselves, and that together you would declare the same loyalty in the way you live.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for patience and wisdom in how the parents or caregivers in your home guide the children. Ask God to correct harshness and to teach everyone to encourage rather than provoke.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this when old hurts sit between family members. Ask for the willingness to bear with one another and to forgive as readily as you have been forgiven, even when it costs you something.

Romans 12:12

Rejoicing in hope; enduring in troubles; continuing steadfastly in prayer…

(WEB)

Take this verse into the hard days. Pray that your family would stay hopeful, patient in trouble, and steady in prayer, especially when the next step is hard to see.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the house is relatively quiet, such as after dinner, before the children go to bed, or early in the morning before the day picks up speed. Gather in one room if you can, and let everyone sit or stand where they feel comfortable. Pray the main prayer slowly, pausing after each paragraph so people can add names or concerns silently or out loud. Some families find it helpful to hold hands or to place a hand on the shoulder of the person beside them.

If your household is not all in one place, you can still pray this together. Agree on a time, call or video chat, and read the prayer aloud to each other. Single parents, grandparents raising grandchildren, and adults living alone who think of a family of origin can all pray these words for those they love. Keep a short list of names on the refrigerator or in your phone so you remember to pray for people who are going through something.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this family and keep each one of you. May He lift His face toward you and give you peace in the ordinary hours and in the hard ones. May your home be a place of rest, laughter, and truth, and may the love you share here reach beyond these walls.
