This prayer is for Veterans Day, a time to thank God for those who have served in the armed forces and to ask for their protection, healing and peace. Pray it on November 11th, at a service or a quiet moment of remembrance, or any day you want to honor a veteran in your life. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Blessings for Veterans Day

Lord, on this day we remember the men and women who answered the call to serve. Some of them left home young and came back changed. Some never came back at all. We thank you for their courage, their sacrifice and the families who waited at kitchen tables and in long nights for their return. Be close to every veteran who carries memories that are hard to put down, whether those are from combat, from a long deployment, or from a service that ended years ago but still feels present every time the sirens sound or the fireworks go off.

Father, we ask you to bring healing to bodies that were injured and to minds that still wrestle with what they saw and did. Give them sleep without fear and days that feel like their own again. Give their spouses and children patience, and give the veterans who feel invisible or forgotten a sense that their service matters and that you see them clearly. Provide steady work, honest friendship and good care to those who need it, and let the people of this country never take their freedom for granted. Keep them in your hand, and let them feel your peace today. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank you for every veteran who served to keep us safe. Heal the wounds they carry, both seen and unseen. Give them rest tonight and remind them that they are not alone. Bless the families who love them and the friends who stand beside them. Let this day be one of honor and quiet gratitude. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and then pray it back to God on behalf of a veteran you know. Thank him that he is a refuge when memories press in, and ask that the veteran would feel his nearness in ordinary, quiet moments.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Use this promise when you pray for a veteran who feels afraid or weary. Ask God to hold them up with his strength, and let the words become your own request for their courage and steadiness.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Pray this for those still serving or returning from dangerous places. Ask God to send his angels to guard them on every road and in every place they go, and thank him for the protection he has already given.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

This is a fitting prayer for veterans burdened by stress, grief or sleepless nights. Invite them to bring the weight they carry to Jesus, and ask God to give them the rest that only he can provide.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Pray this for the veterans who have returned to civilian life and are seeking purpose. Ask God to help them act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with him in whatever work and community they now belong to.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people choose to pray on the morning of November 11th, with a cup of coffee in hand and the flag or a photograph of a loved one in view. You might also pray it at a Veterans Day service, a school assembly or a family dinner where a veteran is seated at the table. Slow down on the lines about memory and rest, since those are the places where many veterans feel the weight most deeply.

If you have a veteran in your own family, read the prayer aloud together or pray it quietly while sitting beside them. You can also write a short note of thanks that includes one line from the prayer, or send the prayer to a friend who has served. Others in your church or neighborhood may be glad to pray with you, so consider inviting them to take turns reading a paragraph each.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless every veteran with peace that settles deep in the heart, and may he keep them safe in every season ahead. May their families feel his comfort, and may their service be honored with gratitude that lasts long past this one day.
