This bedtime prayer is for the end of a hard or uneven day, when you want to hand the day back to God and ask for a better tomorrow. Pray it in the last few minutes before you turn out the light, either reading it aloud as written or using it as a starting point for your own words. Both approaches work, and the aim is the same: rest, release and trust.

Bedtime Prayer for a Better Day

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it really was. Some of it went well, and some of it did not. I replayed conversations I wish I had handled differently, and I carried worries that I could not set down. Thank you for the moments of good that I almost missed: the warm cup of coffee, the kind word from a coworker, the simple fact that I got through it. Forgive me where I was short-tempered, where I grasped at control, or where I forgot that you were with me.

Now I ask for a better day tomorrow. Give me a steady mind when the morning comes, and help me meet the first hard thing without dread. Where I am tired, give me rest that actually restores me. Where I am anxious about money, health, work, or the people I love, I hand those worries to you one at a time, and I ask you to keep them while I sleep. Guard my home tonight, and guard the ones I love who are far away or struggling. Let me wake with a gentler heart than I went to bed with.

Thank you that you do not sleep or grow weary, and that I can rest because you are awake and faithful. Whatever tomorrow holds, I trust you with it. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and the day is done. Thank you for what was good in it, and forgive me for what was not. Calm my thoughts and take my worries into your keeping. Give me a better day tomorrow, with strength for what it brings and peace where I am weary. Watch over me tonight, and let me sleep in your care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse to close the day with trust. Pray it slowly as you lie down, letting the words remind you that rest is a gift God gives, not a reward you must earn by finishing everything first.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the habit of staying up worrying about tomorrow. Pray it as an honest confession, asking God to help you stop striving so hard and to receive the sleep he offers.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

When yesterday went poorly, this passage is a reason to hope. Pray it over the coming morning, thanking God that his mercy is new each day, including the day you are about to begin.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus invites the weary to come to him. Pray this verse by naming the specific burdens you are setting down tonight, one by one, and asking him to take them.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul urges believers to bring every worry to God in prayer. Pray these verses as you release your anxieties for the night, asking for the peace that guards the heart and mind while you sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a consistent spot for this prayer, such as the edge of your bed, a chair beside the window, or the spot where you plug in your phone. Before you begin, put the phone face down or across the room so that nothing interrupts you. Some people find it helpful to hold something in their hands, like a smooth stone, a wedding ring, or a folded note listing the day’s worries, and to open their fingers slowly as they release each concern to God.

If you share a home with a spouse, child, or roommate, you can pray this prayer together, taking turns reading the sections aloud. You might also invite someone who is far away to pray it at the same hour over a phone call or message, so that you are covering each other in prayer as the day closes. Keep the prayer short on hard nights; the shorter version above is just as faithful.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over you give you rest tonight and wake you with fresh hope in the morning. May he steady your heart where it is anxious, strengthen your hands for the work ahead, and remind you that you are never alone in the dark. Sleep well, and let tomorrow be a day held gently in his hands.
