This bedtime prayer is written for parents, grandparents and caregivers who want to bring a child’s faith before God as the day ends. Pray it at the close of the evening, once the lights are low and the day’s noise has settled. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Children’s Faith

Father, thank you for the day that is ending. Thank you for the small victories and the hard moments, for the questions our child asked at breakfast and the laughter at dinner. We bring our child to you now, tired and full, and we ask you to take hold of the things that are heavy in their heart. If they worried about school, a friend, or something they could not say out loud, quiet those fears and remind them that you are near.

Plant your word deep in them, Lord. Let the stories they hear and the prayers they hear us pray become roots that grow stronger with each year. When they doubt, give them patient people to talk with and let them find you in honest questions. Help them know that they are loved by you before they ever do anything good or right. We trust you with their faith, because we cannot make it grow on our own. Keep them safe through the night and wake them to a new morning with hope in their heart. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, our child is ready for rest. Thank you for this day and for every good thing in it. Calm their thoughts, guard their sleep, and let them know that you are with them in the dark. Help their faith grow as they grow, and let them wake knowing you have not left them. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Use this verse to thank God that rest does not depend on us. As you pray it over your child, ask him to give them a peaceful sleep and to remind them that he keeps watch while they rest.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds us that anxious striving is not what God asks of us. Pray it for your child, asking that they learn to receive rest as a gift from the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Here God calls parents to speak his words in daily life, at home and on the road. Pray for the patience and wisdom to talk about faith in ordinary moments, including at bedtime.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

Pray this verse with trust rather than pressure. Ask God to shape your child’s heart over the years and to let the seeds of faith you plant take root in their own time.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

This picture of a shepherd gathering lambs in his arms speaks to the tenderness God shows the young. Pray that your child would feel carried by him, especially when they are small or afraid.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as after brushing teeth or once the bedroom light is dimmed, so the prayer becomes a steady rhythm rather than an occasional event. Sit on the edge of the bed or hold your child’s hand, and let a quiet pause follow each line so they can add their own thoughts. Younger children may enjoy repeating a short phrase back to you.

You can also invite your child to name one thing they were thankful for and one thing they are worried about, then pray over both. Other family members, such as a spouse, grandparent or older sibling, can take turns leading the prayer, which shows your child that faith is shared across the whole household.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your child and keep them through this night. May he give them peace that settles deep and a faith that grows strong with each passing year. May they wake knowing they are loved, held, and never alone.
