This bedtime prayer for my son is written for parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and mentors who want to close the day by entrusting a boy to God. Pray it at the end of the evening, once the lights are low and before sleep settles in. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the things on your heart.
Bedtime Prayer for My Son
Lord, thank You for the gift of my son. Thank You for the day we have just finished, with its laughter and its frustrations, its small victories and its tears. Some of it went well and some of it did not, and I give all of it to You now. Forgive me for the moments I was short with him or distracted, and forgive him for the moments he struggled with his own heart. Let this day rest in Your hands.
Watch over him tonight. Guard his sleep so that his body can rest and his mind can be quiet. If worries are crowding in about school, friends, a hard conversation or something he has not said out loud, settle them in him and remind him that You are near. Protect him from fear and from harm, and surround his room with Your peace. Help him know that he is loved, not because of what he does, but because he is Yours.
Shape his heart as he grows. Give him kindness toward others, honesty when it is hard, and courage when he feels small. Let him see You in the people around him and in the world You made. And as I lie awake some nights wondering about his future, teach me to trust You with it. Thank You that You never sleep and never lose track of him. Into Your keeping I place my son tonight. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, my son is resting now. Hold him close and keep him safe through the night. Quiet his worries, steady his heart and let him wake to a new morning knowing he is loved. Be his peace when I cannot be there. I trust him to You, now and always. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular moment, perhaps right after you turn off the light or as you sit on the edge of his bed. Keep your hands busy in a way that feels natural: resting one hand on his blanket, or holding his favorite stuffed animal or a small cross you keep by the bed. Speak slowly enough that he can hear the words if he is still awake, or pray quietly if he has already drifted off.
Invite others to join you. A spouse, grandparent or godparent can take a line of the prayer each night, or simply say amen together. If you are praying from a distance, call or text him the verse before bed so that he can carry it with him into sleep, and let him know you are praying for him by name.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless you and keep you through the night. May He make His face shine on you and give you rest that restores body and spirit. May you wake to His mercy, carried gently into a new day by the One who never leaves your side.
