This is a short morning prayer for my son, written for the first few minutes of the day, before the alarm goes off in the rest of the house or the school run begins. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own son’s name, struggles and hopes into the spaces where they belong. Both approaches are fine, and both mean the same thing to God.
Short Morning Prayer for My Son
Lord, thank you for this new morning. Before my son is fully awake, I bring him to you. You know the names of his friends, the test he is dreading, the teacher he is worried about, and the thoughts he has not yet found words for. Go before him today. Steady his heart when he feels small, and give him courage to try again when something goes wrong. Keep him safe on the road, in the classroom, on the field and online.
Father, help him to be kind when it would be easier to be unkind, and honest when a lie would be simpler. Where he is tempted to give up, remind him that you have not given up on him. Where he is proud of something he did yesterday, keep him humble and grateful. Let him feel your presence in small things today: a good conversation, a moment of quiet, a stranger who smiles at him. Guard his body and his mind, and let him rest well tonight. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, my son is starting another day, and I give him to you again. Walk with him in what he has to face, keep him safe, and help him to be honest, gentle and brave. Let him know he is loved, both by me and by you. Be near him when he is anxious, and let him feel your peace before he walks out the door. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many parents find it helps to pray this prayer while they are making breakfast, packing a lunch or standing at the kitchen sink before anyone else is up. Keep a copy on the fridge or in a note on your phone so the words are close at hand. If your son is old enough, you might pray it with him at the table or in the car, with his hand in yours or his eyes open on the road ahead.
You do not need to say every line each morning. Some days one sentence will be enough, and on other days you may want to slow down and name each concern separately. Consider asking your spouse, a grandparent or a close friend to pray the same words for your son on the days you are not able to. Shared prayer can carry a family through seasons when one person is running out of strength.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless your son and keep him today. May he make your son’s way clear, his heart steady and his hands useful to others. May he feel your love and God’s love wrapping around him as he goes, and may he come home at the end of the day knowing that he was held the whole way through.
