This bedtime prayer for peace and healing is written for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and the mind will not stop replaying what happened, what hurts, and what tomorrow may bring. Pray it in the last few minutes before you turn off the light, or whenever you lie down and need to hand your body and worries back to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Bedtime Prayer for Peace and Healing

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day, tired in my body and heavy in my thoughts. I bring you the things I could not fix today: the pain that will not leave my back, the worry about the test results, the ache of a conversation that went badly. Quiet my mind, Father, and let my breathing slow. Where my body is hurting, I ask for healing in its time and in your wisdom. Where my heart is anxious, I ask for the peace that does not depend on my circumstances changing first.

I thank you for the good parts of this day, even the small ones: a warm meal, a kind word from a coworker, the sun on the walk to the car. I thank you that you were with me in the hard moments too, even when I did not notice. Watch over my family while we sleep. Guard the people I love who are sick or grieving, and be near to the ones lying awake tonight. Hold them, Lord, the way I am trying to let you hold me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I have carried too much today. Take the worry out of my hands and the ache out of my body. Give me rest I did not earn and peace I cannot manufacture. Heal what needs healing, and steady what is shaking. Keep watch over me and the people I love until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a bedtime prayer in its own right. Read it slowly, then pray it back to God, naming the place in your life where you most need to be able to lie down and sleep without fear.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Use this verse to confess the habit of lying awake running through every problem. Ask God to teach you to rest as a gift from him rather than a reward for finishing your work.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request for a mind that stays fixed on God rather than spinning through worst-case scenarios. Ask him to turn your thoughts back to him each time they drift.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Take these verses and turn each worry on your mind into a specific request to God. Then pray for the peace the passage describes to guard your heart and thoughts through the night.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Bring the physical and emotional wounds you carry to God by name. Pray this verse over yourself or someone you love who is hurting, trusting him as the one who binds up what is broken.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a spot you already associate with rest, such as the edge of your bed or the chair beside it, and turn off the screens at least ten minutes before you pray. Hold a glass of water or a folded blanket in your hands while you speak, so your body has something to do while your mind settles. If you are praying with a partner, a parent, or a friend, read the prayer together, taking turns with each paragraph.

If the prayer feels too long on a tired night, read only the shorter version and then lie still for a few breaths in silence. It is fine to fall asleep partway through. Come back to the prayer the next evening, and let the words grow familiar over time.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he calm the restless places in your body and mind, and may his peace settle over you like a warm blanket. May he bring healing in his time and strengthen you for whatever tomorrow asks.
