This evening prayer is for the end of a long day when your energy is spent and you need God to restore what you have given away. Pray it at bedtime, in the car before you walk into the house, or at the kitchen table after everyone has gone quiet. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your day needs them.

Evening Prayer for Renewed Strength

Lord, I come to you at the end of this day tired in body and thin in spirit. I carried more than I could carry well, and some of it I dropped. I thank you for the work that got done, for the people who needed me and for the small mercies that met me along the way. Now I hand you the things I could not finish, the conversations that went badly and the worries I keep turning over in my mind.

Renew what is worn down in me. Give my body real rest tonight and quiet my thoughts so that sleep can come. Where I have been running on my own reserves, show me again that I was never meant to live from them. Refill me with patience for the people I love, with clarity for the decisions still ahead and with the steady hope that you are already at work in the places I cannot see.

Watch over my home and the people sleeping under its roof tonight. Keep the night safe from fear and the hours free from harm. When I wake, let me meet the morning with strength that is more than my own, and remind me that my tiredness does not make me less loved. Thank you for being awake when I am not. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am worn out and I need you tonight. Take what I could not finish today and give me rest. Restore my strength, quiet my mind and keep my family safe until morning. Let me wake up with more than my own strength to meet the day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29-31

29 He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. 30 Even the youths faint and get weary, and the young men utterly fall; 31 But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

Read this slowly before you pray, and name the places where you feel faint. Ask God to give power to those who are weary, and to renew strength where your own reserves have run out.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

Let this verse loosen your grip on the day. Thank God that rest is a gift he gives to those he loves, and ask him to help you receive it without guilt.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring the heaviest item from your day into this prayer. Tell Jesus what you are carrying, and ask him to take the weight from you as you sleep.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray for the night itself. Ask God to keep watch over you and over the people you love while you cannot keep watch for yourself.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this passage when yesterday’s failures feel heavy. Thank God that his mercies are new each morning, and ask him to let that fresh start reach you before dawn.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a steady moment at the end of the day, after the dishes are done and the lights are dimmed, and sit somewhere you can stay still. Keep a pen and paper nearby if you like, so you can write down whatever you are still carrying and set it beside the prayer. Some people find it helpful to hold a warm mug or a folded blanket while they pray, letting the body settle while the words are spoken.

If you share a home, invite someone to pray it with you or to pray it over you. A spouse, a close friend or an older child can read the prayer slowly while you listen with your eyes closed. Praying together at the end of the day can turn a tired house into a place of quiet, and it reminds everyone that they are not holding up their lives alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who never sleeps give you rest tonight and restore the strength you have poured out today. May he keep you in peace as you close your eyes, and meet you again with fresh mercy when the morning comes.
