A bedtime prayer for the year ahead is a way to hand tomorrow, and the months still unknown, over to God before you sleep. Pray it at the end of the day, once the lights are low and the mind is still running through lists, and read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point for your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for the Year Ahead

Father, the day is closing, and I bring you what I carried through it. I am tired in ways sleep alone will not fix. I have thought about the bills that still need paying, the job that may or may not change, the health checkup I keep putting off, and the children who are growing faster than I can keep up with. Tonight I set those worries down in front of you, one at a time, and I ask you to take them.

As this year unfolds, I do not know every turn it will take. You do. Go before me into the mornings I dread and the decisions I have not yet made. Keep my marriage tender when we are short on patience, and keep my heart soft toward the people who have hurt me or whom I have hurt. Where I am anxious about money, work, or family, remind me that you have already seen what I cannot see and that you are not surprised by any of it.

Watch over me while I sleep. Guard the people I love and the house I live in, and let my rest be deep and unbroken. Wake me with a fresh sense of your nearness and a willingness to trust you one day at a time. Thank you for the good things from today, even the small ones. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am too tired for a long prayer tonight, so I will keep it simple. You know what the year holds and what I fear about it. I give you the unknowns, the plans that may fall apart, and the people I cannot fix. Hold me through the night and meet me with grace when morning comes. I trust you with what is ahead. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down and let it become your own declaration. Pray that the peace you feel tonight would be a pattern for the year ahead, and that you would learn to rest in God’s protection even when you cannot see what comes next.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that striving until midnight is not the only way to provide. Ask God to show you where you have been working from fear, and to teach you a steadier pace for the months ahead.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray for a mind that stays fixed on God when the year’s demands crowd in. Ask for the steadiness that comes from trust, not from having every answer in place.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul connects anxiety with prayer and promises a peace that guards the heart. Bring the specific worries of the coming year into this prayer, naming each one, and ask God to replace the churning with a quiet you cannot manufacture yourself.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These words were written in the middle of grief, yet they speak of mercy that starts fresh each morning. Pray that you would wake up expecting God’s faithfulness, even on days when the year feels heavy and uncertain.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment near the end of your day, perhaps after brushing your teeth and before you turn off the lamp. Sit on the edge of the bed or stand by the window, and keep a pen and paper nearby if you want to write down the specific worries you name. Some people find it helpful to unclench their hands as they pray, opening their palms to show God they are releasing what they have been gripping.

You might also pray this with a spouse, a friend, or your children at bedtime. Taking turns to add one thing you are hoping for in the year ahead can turn a routine night into a shared act of trust. Whoever prays with you can finish with the blessing below, speaking it over each other.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you through the night and carry you into the morning. May the year ahead unfold with more grace than you can plan for, and may you rest tonight knowing you are held by a God who never sleeps and never leaves your side.
