This simple prayer for my grandchildren is written for grandparents who want to bring their grandchildren before God in plain, honest words. It can be prayed at bedtime, at the kitchen table, on the drive to school, or whenever a child comes to mind. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and add each child’s name and the things you know they are facing.

Simple Prayer for My Grandchildren

Lord, thank you for the gift of these grandchildren. You knew them before they were born, and you know every hair on their heads and every worry that keeps them awake. I ask you to keep them safe in body, in their going out and their coming in, on the roads, at school, and in the places where I cannot be with them. Guard their friendships and give them wise and kind people to walk beside them.

Give them a tender heart and a clear mind. When they are unsure of who they are, remind them that they are loved by you and by us. When they make mistakes, help them to own them, to be forgiven, and to try again without fear. Teach them to tell the truth, to care for those who are struggling, and to find joy in small things. Be near to any of them who are hurting right now, and comfort them in ways only you can. Let our family be a place where they feel safe and welcome. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, these children are precious to me and precious to you. Keep them safe today and watch over them when I cannot. Give them a heart that loves you and a mind that seeks what is good. Fill them with peace where they feel afraid, and remind them that they are never alone. Hold them close, and let them grow in your wisdom and kindness. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many grandparents find it helpful to pray at a steady time each day, such as after breakfast or just before the lights go out. Sit somewhere quiet where you will not be interrupted, and keep a photo of the grandchildren nearby so their faces are before you as you speak. If you have several grandchildren, you might pray for one child each day of the week, rotating through the names so each one is remembered regularly.

You can also invite others to join you. Ask a spouse, an adult child, or a friend to pray the prayer with you, or to pray for the same children on their own. Let the grandchildren know you are praying for them, in age-appropriate words, so they can sense that they are carried in your heart. Over time, this simple habit becomes a quiet thread of love that runs through their lives.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless these children and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and be gracious to them. May they grow strong in faith, kind in heart, and steady in hope, and may they know, all their days, that they are deeply loved by God and by the family who prays for them.
