This is a prayer for generosity, a request that God would loosen your grip on money, time and possessions so that giving becomes a joy rather than a calculation. It is useful on payday, before you open the offering envelope, when a need appears in your inbox, or when you notice you have been holding back. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words.

Christian Prayer for Generosity

Father, you gave everything you had so that we could be made whole, and yet I often treat what you have given me as though it belongs only to me. I count my money before I think about who needs it. I keep my time on a tight leash and my kindness for people who can return it. Soften my heart, Lord. Show me where I am holding tightly out of fear rather than trust, and give me the courage to open my hands.

Teach me to see the people around me the way you see them. Let me notice the single mother in my church, the coworker quietly struggling, the neighbor whose car needs repair, and the mission work far away that depends on people like me. When I feel the pull to say “not this time,” remind me that you have never run short of anything I need. Help me believe that what I give away is not lost but placed in your keeping. Make my generosity wise, honest and cheerful, and keep me from giving to be seen. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you have given me far more than I deserve, so let me give freely in return. Loosen my grip on what I call mine. Show me one person I can help today, and give me a willing heart when the moment comes. Remind me that my supply comes from you and that I am free to share it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

2 Corinthians 9:7

Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart; not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.

(WEB)

Paul makes clear that God cares about the spirit in which we give, not only the amount. Pray this verse by asking God to make your giving cheerful rather than reluctant, and to free you from feeling pressured into it.

Proverbs 11:24-25

24 There is one who scatters, and increases yet more. There is one who withholds more than is appropriate, but gains poverty. 25 The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself.

(WEB)

This passage describes a strange pattern: those who scatter often gain more, and those who refuse to give can end up poorer. Pray it as a request that you would trust this pattern in your own finances and relationships.

Acts 20:35

In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

(WEB)

Jesus is remembered as saying that giving brings more blessing than receiving. Pray this verse for a change of heart, that you would actually come to believe it and taste its truth in your own life.

Matthew 6:19-21

19 “Don’t lay up treasures for yourselves on the earth, where moth and rust consume, and where thieves break through and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consume, and where thieves don’t break through and steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

(WEB)

Jesus warns that where your treasure is, your heart will follow. Pray this passage by naming what you are most tempted to store up, and asking God to shift your heart toward what lasts.

Luke 6:38

“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.”

(WEB)

This verse promises that generosity returns to the giver, measured out generously. Pray it as an encouragement to keep giving even when the numbers look thin, trusting God to be faithful with what you release.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray this before writing a check, transferring money or filling out a giving form. Keep a small envelope or note in your wallet with the prayer on it, so you can pull it out at the moment you feel the urge to hold back. If you have a pastor, a friend or a spouse you trust, ask them to pray it with you, and let them ask you later how your giving has gone.

Give your hands something to do while you pray. Place a coin in a jar, write a check, or set aside a specific amount in a separate account labeled for giving. These small physical acts turn an abstract wish into a real habit. Revisit the prayer once a month, noticing where your heart has softened and where it still resists, and bring those honest observations back to God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gave everything for you fill your hands with what you need to share. May he make your heart open and your giving glad, and may you find that every gift you release is held safely in his care.
