This prayer is for anyone who wants to bring their country before God with honesty, gratitude and hope. You can pray it aloud as written at any time, though many people find it helpful in the early morning, after reading the news, or on days when a national election, a hard headline or a public tension is weighing on their heart. It can also serve as a starting point, so feel free to change the wording to name the particular people, places and burdens that are on your mind.

Christian Prayer for My Country

Lord, you are the God over all nations, and you have never lost sight of the people and places you have made. I come to you on behalf of the country where I live. I thank you for the freedoms, the people, the land and the many good things that we often take for granted. Forgive us where we have chosen pride over humility, where we have spoken cruelly about our neighbors, and where we have looked away from those who are suffering.

I ask you to give wisdom to those who lead us, in our government, our courts, our schools and our local communities. Protect those who serve in the military, the police, the hospitals and the fire stations, and keep them safe. Care for the families who are struggling to pay rent, to find work, or to hold together after loss. Open the hearts of your people to show justice, mercy and generosity, especially toward the poor, the immigrant and the forgotten. Heal the divisions that have grown between us, and teach us to listen before we speak. Let your truth and your kindness shape what we build together. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you are faithful to this nation and to every person in it. Watch over our leaders, our neighbors and those who are hurting today. Give us wisdom where we are confused, courage where we are afraid, and compassion where we have grown hard. Let your peace settle over our streets and homes, and let your justice rise in our land. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Timothy 2:1-2

1 I exhort therefore, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and givings of thanks, be made for all men: 2 for kings and all who are in high places; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence.

(WEB)

Paul urges that prayers be offered for all people, and specifically for kings and everyone in authority. When you pray this for your country, you are following that instruction, asking God to grant leaders the calm and clarity that help ordinary people live peaceful, godly lives.

Jeremiah 29:7

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(WEB)

God spoke this to exiles in a foreign land, telling them to seek the welfare of the city where they lived. Praying this for your country means asking God to bless the place you call home, and it reminds you that your own wellbeing is tied to the good of your community.

Psalm 33:12

Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom he has chosen for his own inheritance.

(WEB)

The psalmist names a nation blessed when its God is the Lord. Pray this for your country by asking that the people would turn toward God, trusting him above political strength, wealth or fear, and finding their deepest security in his faithfulness.

Proverbs 14:34

Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

(WEB)

This proverb links righteousness with national strength and sin with national shame. As you pray it, ask God to lead your country toward fairness, honesty and integrity, and to expose the wrongs that quietly harm the weak.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah gives a simple summary of what the Lord requires. Praying this over your country means asking that justice, kindness and humble faith would become visible in its laws, its conversations and the everyday choices of its citizens.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time to pray for your country, such as the first cup of coffee in the morning or a short walk before work. Keep a pen and a notebook nearby so you can write down the names of specific leaders, the events in the news that trouble you, and any answers you begin to notice over the weeks. Praying with a written list keeps your prayers concrete instead of general and helps you remember to give thanks as well as ask.

You do not have to pray alone. Invite a friend, a small group, or your family to pray this with you once a week, perhaps over a meal or during a church gathering. Praying together can soften hard hearts, including your own, and it reminds everyone that the health of a nation is carried by many people standing before God side by side.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who rules over every nation keep your country in his care and fill its people with wisdom, peace and mercy. May he strengthen those who serve, comfort those who grieve, and give courage to those who work for justice. May his good purposes be seen in your land, and may you find rest in knowing that he is never far from it.
