This prayer is for the moment you want to lift your pastor before God, whether on a Sunday morning before the service begins, during a weekday walk, or in the quiet hour before a difficult meeting. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words from there. Either way, it gives your prayers for your pastor a clear and faithful shape.

Christian Prayer for My Pastor

Lord, I come to You on behalf of the pastor You have placed over our church. Thank You for calling them to shepherd us, for their willingness to say yes to a work that is often heavy and rarely finished. Give them rest when the week has been long, and let them sense Your nearness when the phone keeps ringing and the list keeps growing. Guard their marriage and their family, and help them hold those relationships with the same care they give to ours.

Father, give them wisdom for the decisions no one else sees clearly. Speak to them in the study, in the car, and in the early hours when sleep will not come. When they preach, let Your Word be the thing people remember, not their own cleverness. Protect them from discouragement when fruit seems slow, from pride when people praise them, and from fear when criticism comes. Keep their heart tender toward You and toward the people they serve. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless my pastor today. Give them strength for what lies ahead, peace where there is pressure, and clear words for those who need to hear from You. Guard their family, refresh their soul, and keep their eyes fixed on You rather than on the work alone. Thank You for them, and for the faithful way they lead us. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your pastor’s own heart, that the people they lead would be a joy to them and not a burden. Ask God to give your church a readiness to follow well, so that your pastor serves with gladness.

Ephesians 6:18-19

18 With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints: 19 on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the Good News…

(WEB)

Paul asked for prayer for his own preaching, that words would be given to him. Ask God to give your pastor boldness and clarity each time they open Scripture before the congregation.

Psalm 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

(WEB)

Pray that your pastor would rest in the care of the Good Shepherd, who leads His sheep beside still waters. Ask that they would be refreshed in God’s presence even while they tend the flock.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

(WEB)

Ask God to help your church honor the leaders who labor among you and warn you. Pray that love and peace would mark your relationship with your pastor and with one another.

Romans 15:30

Now I beg you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in your prayers to God for me…

(WEB)

Paul asked the churches to strive together with him in prayer. Pray this for your pastor, asking God to surround them with people who will stand beside them in intercession.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find that Monday morning or the hour before Sunday worship works well for praying for their pastor, since those are the times the week’s weight is most likely to be on their mind. Keep a copy of the prayer in your Bible or on your phone, and pray it with your hands open in your lap or resting on the pew in front of you. Writing the pastor’s name at the top of a notebook page can help you return to this prayer with specific needs in view.

Consider inviting a few others from your church to pray this prayer with you, perhaps a small group, a prayer partner, or the elders. Let your pastor know, if it feels right, that you are praying for them by name. Many pastors are encouraged to learn that the people they serve are carrying them before God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your pastor and keep them, and make His face shine upon them. May He give them grace for each day and peace that holds steady under pressure. May the people who pray for them be many and faithful, and may your pastor hear the quiet encouragement of the Father’s own voice.
