This daily prayer for a grieving friend is written for the ordinary mornings and evenings when you want to bring someone you love before God but do not know what to say. Pray it in the morning before the day starts to press in, or in the evening when the house is quiet and your friend’s loss feels close. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayer for a Grieving Friend

Lord, you see my friend today, and you see the empty place that has been left in their life. Some mornings they wake up and remember all over again, and some days the ache comes in waves they cannot predict. Be near them in the moments when they cannot stand, and let them feel your steady presence beneath them. Give them rest when sleep will not come, and let the nights not be so long. Where they feel numb, be the warmth they cannot yet find in themselves.

Father, grief can make even simple tasks feel impossible. Help them with the phone calls they dread, the bills on the counter, the meals they forget to eat. Send people who will sit with them without needing them to say anything. Let them know that it is alright to be angry, to cry in the car, and to laugh again when laughing comes back. Hold their memories of the one they lost, and let those memories be a comfort rather than only a wound. Keep their heart from hardening, and keep them tender toward you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, my friend is grieving right now, and I cannot fix it. Be close to them in this moment. Steady their breathing, ease the weight on their chest, and remind them that they are not alone. Give them one small thing they can hold onto today, and help me be the kind of friend who listens more than I speak. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the moments when your friend feels most broken. Ask God to draw near to them in those exact places, trusting that he is not distant from their sorrow.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Pray this for the wounds your friend carries, some visible and some hidden. Ask the Lord to bind up what has been torn open, and to tend their heart slowly over time.

Matthew 5:4

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

(WEB)

Pray this with hope for your friend’s future comfort. Ask that they would feel the mourning as real while also receiving the comfort Jesus promised to those who grieve.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this as a reminder of the steady love of God. Ask that nothing your friend has lost would convince them that God’s love has been taken away from them.

2 Corinthians 1:3-4

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort; 4 who comforts us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

(WEB)

Pray this for your friend and for yourself as the one who comes alongside them. Ask God to comfort them so that, in time, they might also be able to comfort others.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find the early morning works well, before messages and obligations fill the day. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of tea or coffee and let your hands rest around it, so that the warmth gives your body something to focus on while you pray. If you can, keep the prayer written on a card in your wallet or on your phone so you can return to it during the day when a memory of your friend surfaces.

You might also invite another friend or a family member to pray the same words for your grieving friend on the same day, so that the prayer is being lifted by more than one voice. Consider sending a short text afterward to let your friend know you are thinking of them, without asking them to reply. Prayer and presence often work best together.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who is close to the brokenhearted keep your friend steady through every hard hour. May they feel the comfort of people who love them and the quiet nearness of God who has not forgotten them. Let peace settle over them in the moments they need it most, and may they find, little by little, that hope is still waiting for them.
